>I would really appreciate a basic definition of telemetry.

In a nutshell:

tele - transport across some space or distance
metry - quantifiable measurements

So telemetry is the ability to broadcast and monitor some form of measurement
across some distance.  For example, being able to monitor from the pits the
RPMs on a race car anywhere on the course, or sitting in Houston monitoring
the status (speed, altitude, etc.) of a spacecraft in orbit.

This typically takes two parts.  First, the object being monitored has some
device capable of broadcasting the desired information, either continuously or
on demand.  Second, a receiver must be used to receive the signal and make
sense of it.

Actually, "tele" is the Greek for "distant". Like "tele-phone" = sound from a
distance. There's no link with "transportation", really.

Not that it matters THAT much. :-)

transportation-
trans is latin for "across"
and portat is latin for "carry" i think

not extremely pertinent, but for the general edification of c.r.m: enjoy!
