GPL newby needs advice

by Joakim Lauridse » Mon, 02 Jul 2001 02:07:00

I just picked up a copy of GPL in my local store because I read so much
about how great this game is supposed to be, and it was really cheap. It was
a discount edition (Sierra originals) so I didn't expect the books to be
there in print, but they were. I never really showed the interest in this
game, because the historic thing is not something I thought would appeal to
me, since I have mainly been a fan of current F1 and been playing GP2/GP3.
After downloading the demo a while back I was in no hurry, but gettig it on
sale it have just cought my attention big time now. I was planning on
running Magny Coutse in GP3 all weekend, because of the Grand Prix, but now
I seem to have lost interest, and would much rather race a little more on
the Glen on Monza and Sivestone or crash a little around the Ring....

So now comes the question bit. What is the essentiel downloads for this
game?
I have dl'ed the official stuff from www.papy.com (not the speed patch, do I
need it?)
I've also gotten some om Alison Hine's older setups to get started. So what
else should I go get? I can wait a little for new tracks, since I have 11
right now that I pretty much suck at.
1.13.5 at the Glen is really all I have accomplished so far, but the again,
I only got the game this morning. So how do I get started on my GPLRank?

Sorry if this have been covered a thousand times already, but this is such a
high volume group, that it cane be difficult to find anything.

My intro article at http://www.legendscentral.com/gplintro.shtml should be a
good starting point for you.

Thank You. I just found Alison's site at simracing.dk too, so maybe I was a
bit hasty posting my request. But all advice is still apreciated.

Phil Lee's article is excellent, but here are my own suggestions
anyway:

Utterly essential, drop-everything addon [1] - VROC ( www.vroc.net ) -
online GPL is such enormous fun it should be illegal!

Utterly essential, drop-everything addon [2] - GPL Replay Analyser (
http://www.racesimcentral.net/) - shows telemetry, track driving
lines, compiles race reports, burns replays to CD, calculates
handicaps, exports records to HTML, makes the tea...

Tracks: Solitude and Goodwood from the GPLEA ( www.gplea.org )
Le Mans Sarthe from Roland Ehnstr?m (via the GPLEA site)
Road Atlanta from The Pits ( http://www.racesimcentral.net/)

Great new car models and***pits from the GPLEA (especially the
Ferrari!)

Carsound (allows you to use customised engine notes - via The Pits )

Loads of setups from all over the shop (the top guys do their own, but
for us mortals it's much easier to get someone else's and tweak it to
taste - I've usually found Roland Ehnstrom's excellent, but Alison's
will do you for some while yet.)

<snip>

You need a valid time (not clock smashes or railriding, please!) on all
11 of the tracks that come with the game. Then go to
http://www.racesimcentral.net/;Create new account" and follow
the instructions. Easy! You can have separate GPLRanks for F1, F2 and
F3 cars (ie GP, Advanced Trainer and Novice TRainer), but don't mix
them up.
