Rindt. Bandini and Brabham are dueling each other, being in the first of
the Esses, as I pass the S/F-Line.
Drifting through the entrance of the uphill segment, I shift to fourth
gear. Brabham, than Bandini. I am almost hitting the apex on the left,
start to drift back to the right, approaching the barrier. The Ferrari
in front of me enters the Front Straight. I change to the fifth,
throttling back not to blew the engine that close to the finish. And
again pedal to the metal. The roaring sound of my Ferrari engine drowns
out a metallic click ...
As I try to follow my team-mate, he leaves the slip-stream of Brabham,
preparing to pass him under braking into the Loop. As they vanish behind
the hill, I prepare myself to hit the brakes. Only one-and-a-half lap to
go.
Hitting the brakes, trying to avoid the lock-up of the wheels, I
suddenly feel uncomfortable. The 12-V-engine is still yelling behind me
as loud as it can. I try to play with the gas pedal, and --- s..., where
has it gone. With almost unchanged speed I pass the crest, the throttle
still opened to full extend.
The only thing that remained to be done was to improve the angle of the
impact. But frankly spoken, the technical failure ended my days -
hitting the fence I went airborne, ending up in a pile of metal beneath
the trees of the nice countryside.
Clark did win, 2 sec. in front of Rindt. Bandini was third, Brabham
fourth. Hill and Gourney were the lucky ones on fifth and sixth.
TAL
BTW: Where can I find a replacement spring for the gas pedal of my
Saitek R4 FF-wheel?
