NROS using Netcom???

by John D. Courtn » Tue, 16 Dec 1997 04:00:00

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone here has tried the NROS using Netcom.
I'am using Netcom Canada, I've been with this service for less than a
month and it's a lot better than my old ISP (that went into
receivership!).  Has anyone tried connecting to the NROS using netcom?

Thanks,
John

You can test first by turning off any running programs
except systray and explorer. Use crt-alt-del/end task.
Connect to Netcom. Leave your browser off.

While in Win95 drop to the DOS prompt and run:

ping valhalla.ten.net  (central server)
ping abyss.ten.net  (east coast server)
ping pandemonium.ten.net  (san francisco server)

Ideally, you should do this several times over different
hours of the day. If it returns less than 0.200 ms to
any one server you should be good to go.

Next run tracert to the above places. If you have 7 or
LESS hops you should also be good to go. More and
it wont work.

I have had people say locking your modem at 19200
and turning off compression helps. I have found it makes
no difference in connection quality.

Harry

This 7 or less hops -- is that a good gauage from any ISP or only from
Canada?  I"m on the east coast but it's actually less hops to the
Central server (12) than the East coast server in Mass (15) ...

NROS using Netcom???

Hi!

I'm having a lot of fun racing N2 offline, and
I would like to do some online racing as well.

I tried to open an account with TEN. It didn't work,
because they only let people join that live in the US
or in Canada.

I live in England (London). How can I race N2 online??

If there is a way, please let me know!

THX. Mark.

N2. Maybe the most playable racing sim. Can't wait for
the 3dfx patch!!

[snip]

This should be any ISP. I am only speaking from personal
experience. I'm 14 hops to the pande zone and have NEVER
gotten a good connection. On the other 2 servers I am 6 hops
or 4 hops depending on whether I use MCI or my other
provider.

On one provider I get better results locking the modem at 19200
because they use US Robotics X2s. My old Supra does not like
talking to X2s' at 28.8.  On the other I connect at 28800 with no
problems to TEN.

I believe TEN offers 5 free hours to test it out.

Harry
