Visualising tight bends problem

Is it just me or does anyone else have trouble "seeing"
really tight bends and hairpirn bends in racing sims ?
They never really look or feel as though you have turned
through a very tight angle - the only feel you get is
because you have to slow down so much in order to get round.
To me, most just look like 90' bends, but you have to take
them slower.  I have noticed this in both GP2 and f1 97 on
the Playstation - unless I look at the maps I have trouble
identifying a bend a being really tight.  Consequently I
usually approach too fast (until I get used to the track).
I'm sure that they do not look or feel right and that is
what makes judging them correctly on initial approach so
difficult.

I've always assumed it was a given that you have to memorize the turns
and braking points.  I'm sure I've heard drivers say they're always
planning one or two turns in advance.  I've never been on a real circuit
in an open-wheel car, but you're sitting low to the ground and
approaching the turns extremely fast...you just don't have time to rely
on your reflexes.  Also, some of the turns in both F1 and CART circuits
are behind small hills - the track dips and turns - and there's *no* way
you're going to see those in advance.  It's always seemed pretty
realistic to me.

I agree. At 200+ mph you have to know what's coming up in advance. On an
unfamiliar track you're going to make a few trips into the gravel trying to find
the limits.
