This game is really great to me...  the***pit view is unbelievable!!!!!!!
I know the graphics are not that great but the feel is amazing!  It feels
like you are pulling G's all the way around the track.  You lean into
turns... your head pulls back under acceleration, and it dips during
braking.  Also, I been in a few hi-speed accidents and WOW,  they feel and
sound so real from the***pit.  It's games like this that make racing sims
progress so fast.  I love it...

Remind me never to accept a lift from you :)

Problem is, it's no sim.  It's fun, but if I buy it (probably will), I
know I'll not still be playing it a year or more down the line (like I
am with N2 and ICR2).  If I was being cynical about it, I'd say that
softcos would prefer me just to get a couple of months entertainment out
of a product, because then I've got to dig deep and line their pockets
again for more entertainment.
The***pit view is a nice gimmick, but it's of no real use.  The
graphics are bad considering they're using the 3Dfx (I can see this
argument going on like GP2 SVGA framerates did).  The undulations at
Donnington feel great, but a lot of the challenge of controlling a car
on the limit over them is, IMHO, lost - the cars are just too easy to
drive - and too easy to correct when you overdo it.

Waiting with baited breath for GPL and the 3Dfx N2 patch,

Starting to think that Papy are the only decent true sim producers left.

The accidents are superb. This is one of the few arcade racing games
where the cars have a proper feeling of weight, both in
cornering/skidding and in accidents. Not since NFS1 have I seen this
in an arcade racer (NFS2 doesn't have it at all).

Hey, I happen to think that the SODA demo is utterly fantastic (I
haven't found the full game over here yet - but I'll be buying it the
second I do).
It's a breath of fresh air amongst all of these road racing arcade games
and it's nice to see that there's still some people producing true
driving sims.
The physics in SODA just made me wet my pants when I first drove it (I
use a T2).
We've got no end of realistic flight sims from various companies, but as
far as good race _sims_ go... well I can only think of Microprose (and I
never really _enjoyed_ their F1 stuff) and Papyrus.  The first PC game I
bought was ICR for my DX2 so I guess from the outset my benchmark for
race sims/games was high.  Microsoft CARTPR?  Don't make me laugh.

Getting back to TOCA, how can a game look so bad _and_ use the 3Dfx?
That's got to be some special kind of lazyness.  It looks a lot better
on the PSX (because it runs so much smoother), and that's embarrasing.
SODA is fine with hardware accelleration, and has graphics customisable
enough to make it run well on a non-Rendition machine.  Then there's the
possible 3Dfx patch...

Guess you can't please all the people all the time.  I'm just happy
Papyrus are sticking with the sim freaks out there.  I'll stand by my
statement, thanks.

Second thoughts, I'll make an amendment:

KNOWING Papy are the only decent true sim producers left,

In the past couple of weeks anyone who posted anything remotely
negative about CPR in this newsgroup has been jumped upon and
justification demanded for any comment. In the spirit of fair
competition I would need you to expand upon that comment, and detail
exactly what it is that's wrong with SODA.

In order to maintain any sort of credibility it better be more than
"the graphics aren't good and no 3dFX support" ;-)  AFAI am concerned
SODA is a total blast, and the wheel to wheel racing on my mate Mike
Laskey's track "Survival" is absolutely amazing.

Cheers!
John
