Did anyone else notice how fast the safety car was going during the caution
at Montreal Sunday?  Looking just at the F1 cars it would appear as though
they were crawling, but when the safety car would go by the camera I could
really appreciate how fast they were going - VVVRRRROOOOOM...

That Mercedes was moving!  What speed's do they carry during a caution?

It doesn't always carry the same speed.

In between events the safety sedan and wagon were going full tilt. They were
sliding through Turn 6, smoke and all. And they sounded great. Maybe CLK's?

It should be on the MB site... you can buy that same car.  I think it's a
limited edition MB with an AMG kit but it's available from MB.

I don't have time to look for it now but I remember seeing it last year on
the site.

It's the CLK 55 AMG.  The MB site is as slow as the CLK isn't right now so I
can't get a direct URL.

There was a different pace car driver this weekend. Normaly it's Bernd
Maylander driving.  but I can't remember who drove it in Montreal but it's
also a german who drives (or drove?) DTM.

It was Marcel Faessler, a 25 year old swiss who is driving a mercedes in DTM (german
touring car masters). He'd won his first DTM race about three weeks ago. He was driving
the safety car already at monaco an will drive it again at Nuerburgring, because Bernd
Maylaender is still hurt.

It makes you wonder why CART used an Acura RSX in Japan.  Hmm
4-cylinder front engine FWD car pacing the field?  I'm not sure I
understand the idea behind that.

A pace car paces the field... whether or not it can go quickly enough for
the drivers or the spectators liking is irrelevant.

Besides, Montegi is an oval, so one doesn't need a exhuberantly quick sedan
to serve as a pacecar as the pace speed CART uses (which I failed to find a
fixed number for... is it at the steward's discretion?) is well within the
performance envelope of the Acura there. It's just got to lead them 'round,
not beat them to the 1st corner. ;-)

I read somewhere it's supposed to average at least 80mph when it's leading
the f1 cars.  We were sitting at the hairpin and when it came around the
tires were squealing like mad, which was pretty cool.

Wow, I remember oggling this guy's girlfriend during the Porsche Cup practice
at Indianapolis last year.  We spent the whole session watching for him to pull
into the pits because that ment she would stroll across pit lane and lean into
the car (pointing her ***at us).   :-)

Actually CART and F1 have very stringent rules for pace cars.  The
Acura used in Japan had to be done up in order to pass these rules.

If you knew that, why pose the question in that way? -The question whether
or not it makes sense to use a certain car is in itself senseless: if the
organising body doesn't specify a make or model and it can be made to made
to comply to it's rules, the title sponsor can select any car they wish to
showcase.

Surely the only reason to supply a certain series with a pace car is
advertising? -Ya think the FIA actually payed for that AMG because they
thought it was the best car for the job? ;-)
