What do you do about the lack of peripherial vision?
I race with ICR, but I imagine this same issue would apply to
any of the racing sims. The mirrors have blind spots, you
can't turn your head, and there is no peripheral vision. So you
lose track of cars to the side of you.
I was racing at Milwaukee last night because I enjoy the continual
interaction with the other cars on that track. I was practicing
passing and being passed by cars going almost the same speed as
my own. When I've got a car on my tail and I see it slide over
to the left and move forward, there is a point at which it
disappears from the mirror and hasn't appeared in front of me.
I know it's off to the left, but I have no idea how close or far
away it is. I find myself going into a turn way high which leads
to the obvious complications.
How can I know where that car is? If I just move over I risk hitting
the car and wiping myself (and him) out. If I stay high my speed
through the turn is lousy and I risk hitting the wall. I know there
are plenty of incidents of cars (in the real world) hitting other's
because they weren't seen, but I would imagine that most of the
cases are avoided because the driver is able to turn their head,
has peripheral vision, can hear the car, or other such cues.
In the sim world, what is the best way to handle this?
