There are a number of reasons why the movie quality will be sub-optimal:
1. It is scaled down from the original size (320*200??) to 240*180.
2. It is using lossy compression (using a video codec that could only
be classed as ***quality when comparing with MPEG, what isn't).
... I wonder why they didn't use MPEG since any machine powerful
enough to run GP2 could/should playback 320*200 MPEG in real time.
3. It is highly compressed - the sound samples are more than 5M in
size (stereo/8 bit/22kHz).
4. Most people are probably playing back on 8 bit video with a crappy
colour map.
Also remember this is only 12 frames/sec.
Anyway - Look for the inner beauty. The in-car shot where it is bouncing
around in the sand, with the sky/background and mirrors moving around
perfectly. The views from the broadcast TV cameras which shoot right
into the distance, gives the feeling of how big the track is - almost
looks like real TV coverage. The detail in the car closeup even with all
the above compression features. The textures used for the crowds, the
signs, the sky, underneath the bridge and so on.
The main part which I reckon is bogus, is the 360 spin off, with the bouncing
looking very unrealistic from outside the car. But I am sure that it will
be perfect in the release.
And of course the driving is bogus - but they wanted to show off the sand
traps.
Bye - Mark
