Hey RAS Gurus !

Since the Pentium III's came out,  I figured that I could upgrade from my HP
P166mmx (with 32 Mb ram) to
a custom built system for a cheaper price.

I have a business acquaintance who builds systems and the Pentium III 450 is
the same price as the Pentium II !!! Therefore,  I ordered  the following:

Pentium III 450mhz with 64mb sdram
AOpen Awe 64 Sound card (I haven't heard of this one but he said it
is very good)
        Diamond Monster II 3dfx card
3 - 60 watt speakers including sub woofer
        USR 56k modem
        10 gig HD
        17" monitor
        Ps 2 mouse
        Standard keyboard
        Two year on-site warranty.

The main reasons for upgrading is to run N2 on Ten with everything on,   to
run GPL with everything on,  and to be ready for N3 when it comes out !

The exact quote is at my office but this system will cost about $ 1,750. The
only ??? I have is about the AOpen sound card !

What do  you guys think?

I have the MX300 and, aside from being a great sound card, it has an excellent
digital game port.  You know that dreaded box "poll with interrupts..."  Well,
it's not even a choice for the digital port.  Smoothest joystick response I have
ever had.  On the test screen where you move the joystick cursor, it is rock
solid.  No twitching like I used to get with a regular game port.  I feel like I
got a 3d sound card and PDPI game port in one :-).  Hey, it's only $89 bucks so
why not give it a shot.  BTW, get the 128 MB of ram now (GPL replays eat ram and
look real nice), you'll be glad you spent the extra $90.  Isn't great how I help
you spend more money!

1750 dollars? I would have thought it would be much cheaper in the USA.
Over here in Britain, the land of high prices, I'm getting a new PC for
1173 pounds inc. VAT (about 1650 dollars?), including:

- PIII-450
- 16Mb Voodoo III 3000
- 128Mb SDRAM
- 10.2Gb hard drive
- Soundblaster 64
- 3rd Gen DVD drive
- 56k modem
- 17" Monitor
- Win98, Corel Suite 8

I'm getting it from a company called Quantex. I think they have an
American division. Check http://www.qtx.com , it might work.

>Hey RAS Gurus !

I am not!

Get 128

Go for the SB Live! or the MX300.

If this isn't a Banshee, you need a primary Videocard. You could go
for a Banshee or a Rendition 2200 based card, like the Hercules
Thriller 3D 8Mb version. A TNT card isn't the best choice for N2 and
GPL ATM.

If you want to race online, and you've to go for an analog modem, then
I would look for an USB model. A serial modem isn't very stable.
