sound chip.
Should I use this on-board sound thingy or would I be better off using my SB
Live PCI card ?
What's the pros and cons.?

First, if you install your SB Live card, DO NOT install it in the first
slot.
It will not work and will just lock up your machine
I used the onboard sound for awhile before I figured out why my SB Live was
locking up my machine and while it sounds ok, there is a problem where after
a while of use, it just stops working.
Sound completely goes away until you reboot, never could figure out why.
I would use your SB Live card (make sure you disable the onboard sound in
the bios) and just make sure you do not put the SB Live card in the first
slot.
I have onboard sound too (AC,97) but after using it for a while I went
back to my SB Live!. I found the onboard sound is generally inferior
(some crackling) and it doesn't do 3D sound hardware acceleration
(inferior performance).
Thx.

No matter what I do or where put the card, I'll get a "general page fault"
when trying to boot windows up after having gotten windows to recognize and
install drivers for the card.. I.E Windows will boot if I move the card to a
new PCI-slot... but it will crash the next time I try to boot-up.... and
moving the card form slot to slot - isnt exactly a neat solution....
Anyone got any ideas here? I "deleted" the old "card" in windows and
disabled all sound releated things in the bios before i installed the Live!
card. I've also tried to move the card to differrent slots.. #1, 2, 4, and 5
I think... I've download the latest drivers from Creative aswell as VIA...
I also beleive I got the latest bios for my MSI KT7-Turbo R m/b..
Any ideas?

I got a MSI K7T-Turbo mobo with a SB live working fine after a long
battle :-(
These are the steps u should follow to get it right :
- Flash latest bios in the MSI board (v 2.8)
http://www.msi.com.tw/support/bios/mainboard/6xxx/6330/w6330v28.exe
This takes care of the incompatibility issues of the Via kt133a chipset,
686b southbridge with the SB live, i.e. data corruption.
read more here : http://www.viahardware.com/686bfaq.shtm#_Toc518065962
- Disable in bios :
onchip sound, legacy sb
enable memory by SPD
if u dont use both (via) IDE channels, disable them as well ( or the one
u don't use) this frees IRQ 14 and/or 15, which will be taken by the
Promise raid controller.
- I've the sb card in PCI slot 4, arrange your cards so that it's irq is
not shared with other devices. ( preferably it should have IRQ 5)
- Install the latest Via 4in1 driverset :
http://download.viahardware.com/4in1432v.zip
- I use the default WindowsME and Windows2000 (dualboot) Soundblaster
Live drivers, especially in Win2k i had stuttering/crackling sound with
the Creative drivers.
- Another tweak to enable 4-way interleaving for your memory
http://www.viahardware.com/download/george/MemoryEnable.zip
Should give a little boost in memory speed.
- Enable EAX in N4 and enjoy the most richest sound youl'le heard in a
racing sim :-)
Hope this helps a bit,
Ciao,
Remco.

Now.. having said that....
Can you tell me how/where I disable this?? I've looked everywhere - but no
luck..
I'm currently using IDE 0 for my C and D-harddisks... and IDE1 for my DVD
and CDRW.
Whilch means I should be able to disable (if possible) the 3rd and 4th IDE
channels (the Promise ones..)
I have disabled both my Comm-ports tho.. I dont use them anyway. :-)
Btw, anyone know any good Award Bios-guides out there?

N4 didn't even work right with it. Issued nothing but a high-pitched squeal
sound.
These on-board audio things are mainly for business audio...
There is hope. The specs on the nVidia nForce chipset are extremely
promising in all area's, especially sound. They are really going all-out on
the sound!
