Graphics Aperature Size ??

by Rudebo » Sun, 07 Mar 2004 02:32:29

Been trying to squeeze more performance out of my rig -

A7N8X Deluxe MoBo
Athlon 2200+
GeForce Ti 4200
512 MB DDR
XP

I noticed that the Graphics Aperture Size in the BIOS was set at 64 MB.  As
I understand it that's the amount of System RAM that is saved for Video for
when the GPU's RAM is full.  Correct? My Ti 4200 has 128 MB Ram would upping
the Graphics Aperture Size to 128 MB give me any performance boost? Would
more RAM help?

While we are on the subject of my Ti4200 I've never been able to work the AA
to any satisfaction (GPL, F1C and NR2003) as anyone with a Ti4200 and
similar specs got AA to work?

And whats the deal with the new drivers 53 and now 56?  Is 56 going to be
released?  Will it help me or is it just really for FX cards?

Thanks

It's not how much ram it saves for AGP texturing, it's how much it has
available to use. In theory the size you set shouldn't make a
difference to performance because it's only used if needed. But I
remember on my R8500 it did make a difference to performance for some
odd reason. Best is to try either 64 or 128mb and then test it out. I
have mine set at 128mb but many use 64mb too. I have 1gb of ram so I
can afford to allow it to use more ram if needed.

Depends on the game, in some games it works and in otehrs it causes
problems. On that card I would just use the Quincunx setting and see
how it works in the game. If no good turn it off.

Yea, newer drivers are really for the newer cards. I have two PC's and
one has a Ti4200, I use the 30.82 drivers as they are rock solid and
I've never had any issue with them. But I don't run new games on that
system. They get installed to the PC with the R9800pro. BTW, the
system with the Ti4200 has 512mb of ram and I have the aperature set
to 64mb.

Actually, it's the size of the "hole" (aperture) in the PCs memory range that the the AGP mem is
looked at/for.  Explained much better here:

All you *ever* wanted to know about the Bios, & then some.  ;o)

Works fine in GPL for me, but ignore the checkbox in the menus, it's for
old Rendition cards. Huge framerate hit in F1C and LFS. Set it in
display properties and see how you go.
System is:
P4 3GHz
GeForce Ti 4200
1GB DDR
Win XP

Just installed 56.57 for my Ti4200... after I watch the GP today I'll
see if my sims run okay!
