I'm currently being driven away from in online races, by folks using their
own setups, I find that I can hang with drivers using the default seups, and
I'm chewing up a lot of time trying to make changes to the cars, run laps,
make changes, and I'm not even sure which changes will effect which
conditions, in nascar2 I understood how the changes worked on the cars, but
GPL offers so many possibilities, that I'm a little lost.....Is there a site
that has setups for the cars(I've seen and used Allison's for the Coventry)
so that I don't pull out what little hair I have left trying to make these
things go?

Hi Edward,

You can try my setups (see the signature for the URL) but be warned that I used
a regular combined gas/brake T2 and do not trail-brake.  Just brake before you
turn and you should be fine.

I have setups for most cars/tracks -- the Eagle being my favorite for competing
with the Lotus crowd :)

Jason.

Alison also has her setups for the BRM and the Murasama.  (Don't knock 'em till
you try 'em.)  She also has setup colections from Jason and Achim, I think.  I
got a couple of nice hodgepodge files from her site, Jason's had setups for 4 or
5 of the cars at all of the tracks, (including a nice one for Ferrari at the
Glen), and if you dowload all of the collections, you should be able to piece
together every car for every track.

There are other sites that have dowloads of just Brabhams, for example, but you
have to hunt to find every car's set and the ones from the beta team rip anyway.

I have found the only way is to take a track at a time - give it a few
days and practice constantly with one car.  I slowly experiment with
all the settings until it suits me.  THEN MAKE A COPY OF THE SETUP AND
SAVE IT.  I find it too easy to tweak a setup and then realise I have
changed something to worse and not be able to get it back.

Personally, for my driving style, I like a hard setup, so I tweek up
the the wheel rate. bump and rebound and the Anti Roll bar from the
default and then run a few laps slowly to get the tyres to warm up and
then adjust things so that the I just don't loose the backend on a
corner.  Once I have got to that point I am beginning to feel the car,
the differences with each setup and when I have done a good lap.  I
then start playing with gear ratios etc to squeeze a bit more.

However, I have to say, that the biggest improvement in performance
came by getting to a point where I could do lap after lap at speed
without coming off.  How much of that is due to setup I am not sure.

Alison Hine has nice, very driveable setups for the Coventry, Murasama, and BRM
now.  Plus, you can try these out on other cars by copying them with a
different file extension to match the type of car.  The Coventry setup files,
for example, end with .co1.  Changing that to .lo1 will allow the setup to be
used in a Lotus.(.ea1 for Eagle, .fe1 forFerrari, etc.)  They won't be exactly
right, as gear ratios will need changing, etc. but they're a pretty good
starting point.
If you're really feelin' the need for speed, you can download some really fast
laps and the setups used to do them, and give them a whirl.  A good site for
these is http://gpl.gamesmania.com/.  They're mostly (but not all) Lotus setups
and they tend to be unforgiving, but if you've got the synapses for it, they
ARE fast.

I've done this exact thing. Downloaded a (ferrari) hotlap and matching setup
for Watkins Glenn from gamesmania. After watching the hotlap for driving style,
I immediately improved from 1:07.23 to 1:06.85 without much effort. So now I'm
off to the 1:05's (hopefully :)).

Hi Justin,

I just checked and my Ferrari / Watkins Glen setup is the default.

Is this a joke? ;)
