Yes  a huge program/idea...but the big question is...
what is the biggest online field possible with F1rc?  By possible I mean not
just can you connect 15 or 20 drivers, but will they have a reasonable
expectation of smooth play?
So  I guess a better way to word my question is, how many users can
connect before it becomes a slide show?

Relay Game Network has Arrived (long post... features overview)

by Schum » Sat, 08 Sep 2001 01:41:52

Hi Dave,

In all honesty, we have no control over the game's pogramming or
limitations. In fact, I'll be the first to say (from indepth experience with
it), that it is a bit flakey at times (it seems to run much more stably on
an NT kernel OS for example). We chose F1RC originally because we already
had the basis, experience, and community foundations for an F1 game
(although we can support any genre and pretty much any game).

At this point it is very much a demonstration to other game developers that
basically states "This is what we can do with no support, with a game that
is not particularly designed for robust online play, and what we can do with
a little support is quite a bit more".

To answer your question directly:

We tested with 12 players online, and that included all with a decent
broadband connection, relatively close in proximity (geography), and the
host with a monster machine. There were small amounts of lag, but it wasn't
unbearable by any means. However, with a truly global and mixed connection
field, we feel that 6 players would be a reasonable field to ensure proper
play.

Also keep in mind that F1RC was designed as a LAN game, with some inherit
Internet capabilities. You will always find that a Client-Server system will
perform better simply by virtue of the way the game syncronizes the players,
send the data, and the reduced load on the host during play (of course there
are other mitigating factors, but those are the biggies). We have a
Dedicated Server Program that is equally scaleable, and has almost as many
unique features as our client, but that requires developer support,
something for which UbiSoft is restricted from providing due to licensing,
although have expressed regret that this is the case.

In fact, we have also developed what we term a "Peer-to-Peer Hybrid" System,
which will allow the retention of P2P play inheritly, but also carries the
option of setting up dedicated servers that carries the benefits of a
client-server configuration, and even supports cross-platform (still putting
finishing touches on that)

At the end of the day, you only see the tip of the iceberg as far as what we
have completed, since many of the more advanced and shining features of the
system requires about 72 hours of the developer's time to support.

We'll keep plugging away in hopes that someday soon a developer will step-up
and allow us to "release the arsenal of features" that the Sim Community
deserves, and that we can provide.

Hope that answers your questions. 6 Players is not 19, but the play is still
pretty fun regardless.

If you feel it is the wrong game... contact the developers of the game you
want it to support... we are willing if they are :)

Cheers,

Relay Game Network has Arrived (long post... features overview)

by Kirk Hous » Sat, 08 Sep 2001 02:42:55

I don't have F1RC but I'm wondering if your app is setup like VROC?  If so
is there a chat window beneath a race list?  Also, what are the chances of
you guys adding GPL support?  VROC is great but the GF3 slowdowns, etc. will
probably mean a slow death for it.  The VROC source is not available AFAIK
so maybe if you added a tab for GPL and hopefully WSC you might get a bigger
response and therefore more competition.  One more question, are you
associated with FILSCA?  If not, are they thinking of creating a similar
app?

Relay Game Network has Arrived (long post... features overview)

by Schum » Sat, 08 Sep 2001 03:58:42

Hi Kirk,

Is Relay Client setup like VROC? Hmmm....

I suppose the best way to say this unbiased is to call upon a comment a user
made on the system in the HG Forums.

"Relay is like VROC on Steroids"

It is similar in spirit, but I am pretty sure all will agree that we pack a
LOT more features and flexibility in basic design.

We do have a chat window beneath the session lists, and there is a plethora
of features/function/integration within the other Client Sections as well.

As far as adding GPL support...

Well we approached the makers of VROC on this subject about a year ago. Even
offered to host the racelist on our highspeed bandwidth pipes in the
interim. However, this seemed to not meet their liking, and the offer fell
through.

To do GPL at this stage would be difficult. It took us a long time to get
F1RC working with no developer support, and when you consider that we can do
it quite quickly and efficiently with only a small amount of support... it
seems the effort would be in vain. If the makers of VROC would like to share
a bit of information regarding the process of linking players through VROC
(we know how they do it... just need to pass the command-line parameters to
the game), we are sure we could streamline it, and employ all of the
features that F1RC currently enjoys... and then some. However, that decision
is out of our hands, and we do not foresee Papy making any further efforts
towards GPL.

As far as WSC... we have been in contact with Chris about the client, and
his first impressions were favorable (without even seeing most of the
features now in action). However, believe it or not, certain parties in the
community saw fit to play some politics, and we have not heard from Chris
again. We would very much like to support WSC, but again, that ball is in
Chris' court.

As far as our association with FILSCA... no we are not, and do not foresee
ourselves ever being associated, for numerous logistical and technical
reasons (based on what I have read so far). Whether or not they are in the
process of creating a similar app, I of course have no idea, but if they
are, they're going to seriously have to rethink their revenue model and
practical logistics (again based on what I've read so far). At least, that
is from what I know of the industry, etc.

At the end of the day... if you want those other games to be playable on
Relay, we would love nothing more than to provide it, and support it.
However, it takes a bit of correspondence from the community to voice your
desires in online racing to the developers. We have the tools, etc. to do it
today... we just need the small amount of support from the developers.

Hope that answers your questions.

Cheers,
Jason 'Schumi' Murray

| I don't have F1RC but I'm wondering if your app is setup like VROC?  If so
| is there a chat window beneath a race list?  Also, what are the chances of
| you guys adding GPL support?  VROC is great but the GF3 slowdowns, etc.
will
| probably mean a slow death for it.  The VROC source is not available AFAIK
| so maybe if you added a tab for GPL and hopefully WSC you might get a
bigger
| response and therefore more competition.  One more question, are you
| associated with FILSCA?  If not, are they thinking of creating a similar
| app?
