Sort of newbie question but curently I have Diamond Stealth 64 video card
with 2M of RAM.  Now I was wondering if getting a good 3d card with 8M of
RAM (for instance: Matrox Millenium) will improve frame rates at all
on GP2 ??!!

no, gp2 depends only on cpu power.

Paul,

The 3d engine is handled by the processor alone.  If you change the video
card the info will still be sent to the card at the same speed as before the
change.  If you want a faster frame rate you will need to drop the detail
level and/or upgrade the processor.

Not true, any improvement in video speed will have an effect.  I went
from a 2Mb Stealth to a 2Mb Millenium and there is a noticeable
reduction in processor occupancy, especially when dealing with large
sections of static scenery, eg Hockenheim, Monza and Imola tree lined
areas.

Interesting.  I tried a 2MB Millenium in my machine, which normally has a
Stealth64 Video 2MB DRAM.  As long as I enabled Univbe (the s3 chips benefit
from this), there was practically no difference.  For example, in a
particular Monaco setup, both delivered a PO of 175-181%.

In other games, the Stealth64 was faster!  Some results:
                              Stealth            Millenium
Doom (VGA)              70.8 fps          67.5
Air Warrior (SVGA)     69.9               65.5

They were the same in ICR2 and ATF.
I have seen little, if any, difference in Win95 640x480 games between these,
the vaunted ET6000 (slightly faster) and the new favorite, the Riva128.

So, I'd say, if you are considering the change solely for the purposes of
higher framerates in games, don't bother making the switch.

Mister, there you are wrong. GP2 doesn't take advantage of 3D cards, but
with a fast 2D card, as the Millenium (II), the framerate will be
significantly faster than with a slow 2D card.
I understand that the Millenium II is a 2D/3D card, but when playing GP2
only the 2D features are used.
