Hullo

That subject sounds like a badly written dating ad doesn't it.

Anyway onto my query.

I've just purchased EA Sports F1 2001, mainly because I got it cheap and it
included the F1 manager game as a bonus. The other selling point was the GT
mod V2 that I downloaded the other day. Up to now my PC racing games have
been more arcade than sim, I did try GPL a couple of years ago, but I don't
think I gave it long enough as it was sooo hard to get to grips with, and
eventually I sold it on as it was gathering dust on my shelf.

Whilst the game itself works fine and looks very nice indeed, I cannot get
the throttle on my logitech wingman force feedback joystick to work.

There is an option in the game to adjust the sensitivity of the Z axis, but
when trying to assign the throttle to accelerate and brake it doesn't accept
that they exist. I can't use the joystick up/down to control the throttle it
makes steering much more dificult for me, and I've always used an analogue
throttle, so buttons are out.

I've checked for a patch and can't find anything, and can find no help at
all on EA's sites and FAQ's.

I'm still kinda annoyed that they haven't even bothered to include force
feedback support in the game either.

It seems the EA games are getting worse and worse, I was going to buy Medal
of Honour until I found out all the problems using it with a Voodoo 5 5500.

If you guys/gals can't help I'm seriously considering taking it back to the
shop and never buying another EA product again. It's this kind of shoddy
workmanship that encourages people to pirate software, after all why should
we pay for a product that doesn't work properly.

Now I'm not saying piracy is good at all, but when you pay your hard earned
money for something that won't work fully it's damn annoying.

Well I hope some kind soul can help me with this one. Sys specs are below
KT7A-Raid
Athlon 1.4ghz
Thermoengine V60 cooler/fan
2x WD 40GB ATA100 HD's
Windows 2000 Pro service pack 2 and all other updates.
Voodoo 5 5500, tried different drivers and settled on the X3DFX 1.08.04 ones
from Nov 2001. Works very well indeed.
Sounblaster Live 5.1 with latest drivers.
Joystick is the logitech Wingman force, works fine in all other games.

Thanks

Which I may have already found a solution to.  Seems like EA don't  like to
prived a link to an official game site from there main site.

I've found an update patch, but it does say it's a beta one. It lists fixes
for Force feedback and problems with logitech devices amongst others.

It's 9.5MB download and I'm only on 56k, so I 'll have to wait an hour for
it to download before I can try it.

I'd still be interested in hearing any other problems/solutions anyone may
have had.

As you've already found the FF patch, the only thing you seem to need is
advice in how to use your throttle.  I have a Wingman Digital 3D joystick,
which as I recall is identical to yours, just without FF.  I have noticed
that few games actually support the sliding throttle at the base.  I nearly
always had to resort to using a button for throttle and brake each.  Not a
good solution - the best button to use for throttle was the trigger, and my
finger went numb after just a few laps.

You can experiment with whatever button combinations work best for you, but
if you want my honest opinion, this game should be run with a wheel.  It's a
pricey solution if you don't run sims a lot, but if you get a nice wheel
(Momo Force) then you'll get hooked with a capital H.  There is no
substitute for using a wheel - you already know how to use it, and if you
don't (age?) then it's extremely good practice! ;)  HTH

I downloaded the patch and it also added support for the throttle, so I'm
now very happy. And the FF is quite good, I may even have to turn it down a
little from my usual 120% setting.  :O)

I'm 32 and have been driving for well over 12 years, even managed to squeeze
in some rally/touring car lessons a few years ago. I live within spitting
distance of Silverstone. The wheel isn't really an option at the moment, I'd
want a decent one and I just don't have a spare 80-90 (UKP) laying
around... not with my DVD buying ***ion and girlfriend to support.  :o)

I'm still experimenting with button configs, so far I've got the views on
the POV Hat, gear shifts on butotns 5/6 and things like rev limiter, pit
stops on 7/8.

Now all I need do is work my way through all the driving lessons and
practice, tried a quick race and got creamed by the AI and my very bad
driving.

Later I'm gonna install the GT V2 mod I downloaded last week.... I just
wanna drive a Porsche GT3 around the parabolica.  :o)

You put your girlfriend ahead of a steering wheel? No wonder you never
got anywhere with GPL... ;-)
