I was wondering if NASCAR 2 overcame the limitation that the
"Dialer" can only see 7 ahead in the 2 player mode.  Over an
IPX network, "nascar -n:userid", there should be plenty of
bandwidth to support seeing all 38 cars ahead.  Is this going
to be addressed with the next release of NASCAR?

Also, what changed in the 1.36-m release of Hawaii?

The "7 ahead" is going to remain.  The IPX implementation is a product
of the online version which only has enough bandwidth for 7.

The online version is designed for modem use = 9,600 bps.
We hear that one of the new features in NASCAR2 will be IPX support.
IPX over common 10m ethernet is 10,000,000 bps (in theory).

9,600 -vs- 10,000,000     Quite a difference.

Using the current MULTI with IPX drivers to connect two computers uses
less than 1% of a 10m ethernet.  Extend that from 2 to 8 computers and
from 7 to 39 cars and there is still alot of bandwidth for the
communications aspect.

Again, the limiting factor will be HW performance?  Comments?

I think what Ed was trying to get across, is that the IPX part of
NASCAR2 will be using the already written multi-player code which is
limited to 7 ahead.  Therefore, unless the programmers write new
code for the IPX (thus delaying the game intil July 1997), we will
only have 7 ahead.

I agree it would be cool to have the full field ahead & behind.  But,
there are realistic limitations.  If the programmers had their way,
there never would be a finished product.  The only people who would ever
see the likes of NASCAR2/3/4/5, would be the programmers.  Programmers
always want to do more and enhance what they got.  Let's give them a
chance to get a solid working 7 ahead version out the door.  But, let's
also not let them forget we want more too!  (Down the road that is.)

I have been reading this news group for about two months, and was
begining to wonder if the only people who posted had any enjoyment or
appreaciation of the fantastic simulations that already exist.
I would like to use this discusion above of features and desired
enhancements as "reasonable" dialogue. Unfortunately this type of
dialogue is so far and few between. I cringe when I think about the
absolute ***that Ed and his staff and other staffs must read to get to
one descent disscusion of their product.
Ed and any other programmers or developers that are reading this I for
one just want to say thank you for the great programs we already have,
and for the great ones on the way!
I think we enthusiasts get a fantastic deal on most of the current
products available. I too wish that all software was free and would
run 30fps on my 486sx with surround sound, 3d graphics, flipping cars,
Hooter Girls in the winner circle, self installing, complete with a
steering wheel and pedals. Let us not forget a genuine doctors note
for when we miss work. And by God I better NEVER see one bug EVER!!
I think some of the people out there think that every producer of
software is out to***you off, take your money, and generally just
ruin your day.
I have had some problems running some software, and been frustrated
with this or that, but I can honestly say I have had 1000 times more
fun.
As I step down from the soap-box the last thing I will say is:
" If all you can do is *** and moan and whine and be critical, please

intelligent dialouge."

Allen,

Since NASCAR II is still under development, it is still to early to know if
it overcame this limit, but I'm hoping to be able to increase the number of
cars visible on the "Dialer" for IPX network races.

Ed - I'm hoping to be able to improve the IPX performance for N2.  Its not
in there yet, but I'm pretty sure we can do it in our copious free time.

Well said Michael & 100% in agreeance.

Hell, I've been ***in''bout wantin' IPX in Indycar for so long now I'd
given up all hope. Well even NASCAR is better than no IPX at all <g> and
moots well for the future IPX of Indycar X after Indycar X-1 inevitably
also goes online.
