in July. The days of going 350 km/h at the end of the back straight are over

Wow... that looks only slightly longer than the old short course!! What will
the laptimes be like.... 50seconds?

Personally I think it's looking ok:ish apart from that extra twisty
back into the stadium. Shame is perhaps that it had it's character
that set it apart from other tracks with the woods and the straights
and all. But it's not like I'm going to cry a river that the
start-stop-start-stop-start-stop-start-stop backstretch is gone...

That really is a shame. I realize the safety issues involved, but I really
hate to see all these twisties and chicanes with no high speed straights. A
good course should have a combination of all, imo.

From my understanding, the changes come right from the top. Bernie
Eccelstone was not satified with how LONG it took the cars to complete a
lap, don't know if he was addressing on-site fan concerns or TV appeal, but
they didn't shorten the track because of local or enviromental issues.
I too will NOT miss the chicanes....they put a false pretense to the track
since they did NOT create passing zones, merely forcing everyone to lineup
to clear the chicanes...which effectively limits passing further...
However, looking at that track map only very quickly, it would seem the
only 'passing' spot might be approaching the 180 degree hairpin at the back
edge of the new course.

Oh, yeah. I forgot the "Bernie Factor!" My bet is TV rather than on-site. That's
where Bernie's real money comes from. It'll be interesting to see where they can
pass. Going into that hairpin does look like the best bet. The new layout also
gives them more places to put expensive seating.

Good. I hate that track. It's one of the most boring in the F1 season. The
new version looks like it will be intertaining to watch and to race (in say
F1 2002). It will certainly make the infield more of a concern, where with
the old track, with the setups you had to run, you just tried to make it
through the infield as fast as you can with little to no downforce.
What do I know? Just my opinions.
