Controller with mind of its own...

I use a Destiny analogue wheel and pedals (don't laugh) with my PC, and I
get no end of trouble with it. When I calibrate it, all seems well, but as
soon as I try any racing games the controls are permanently flickering
around, jabbing brakes and accelerator, twitching the wheel etc.

I use Windows ME, and have 900mhz Duron with 384mb ram and a GeForce 4200Ti
card and 30.82 detonator drivers. The same thing happens if I use an
analogue joystick so it doesn't seem solely down to my hardware.

I've tried adjusting the sensitivity in the games but this makes no
difference. Sometimes the game sets itself up so that the steering is
reversed. The games I try this with are GP3, GPL and TOCA2.

Any menus selected in game by use of the wheel are unselectable as the
controller seems to have a mind of its own.

Is there any settings or patches I should be looking at? The games are all
patched up to date as far as I know. The wheel is fine on other computers -
is there any file in the controller menu that could have got corrupted?

maybe there's something wrong with wherever you are plugging it in... are
they both in the gameport? if so where is the gameport.

The gameport is on the soundcard - an AC97 card. Could it be driver problem
for the card do you reckon? The computer is only 12 months old.

Rick, is there any way you can try the wheel on another computer? Also, how
old is the wheel and has it always had problems? We should try to determine
if the problem is dirty pots in the wheel or if it's a gameport problem.

The wheel is 3 years old - I dismantled it this evening and used a bit of
WD40 in the components (now you'll tell me that was the worst thing I could
have done!) - the pot on the end of the steering stem seems to be a sealed
unit. I guess it will work out cheaper buying a new wheel unless a clean of
the interior is a feasible task?

Yep, I used to use WD-40, but most people advise against it. The recommend
tuner cleaner. Get a TSW2!

A better choice than WD-40 is Graphite.  No residue buildup.

I may have misunderstood.  Did you use WD-40 *inside* the potentiometer?  Or
on the movable parts/pivots etc?  If I was mistaken then electronics cleaner
can be found at any radio shack to clean the pots.

Well, I wouldn't use wd40 all the time, but that's fine right now for our
troubleshooting purposes. Now, did the wheel always behave like this on your
computer? Spray the sealed pot anyway, some will get in. Is it better or
worse after spraying it?

Second that,
WD (Water Displacement) is not a cleaner, neither a lubricant. But perfect for
trouble-shooting. Forget your pot after this procedure though.
