any hope for a new Daytona ?

I am a hopeless fan of Sega's Daytona USA.  that is, the arcade game, the
arcade sequel, the Dreamcast release and the bonus track 2 in Xbox OutRun2.

regarding a new Daytona game, we have this article from 2 years ago:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

____________
World Exclusive: Daytona 3 to launch on Xbox Live
AM2 racer sequel in the works for Microsoft.
14th Oct 2002

We can exclusively reveal that the next instalment of Daytona, AM2's
acclaimed racing series, will be released exclusively for Xbox and will have
a heavy online slant.

This thrilling news comes as the last instalment of Daytona, released for
Dreamcast, had its online support withdrawn around the world.

Yu Suzuki's team is already hard at work on the game, which is currently
carrying the name Daytona Live, though this is likely to change. We can also
tell you that Sega and Microsoft are working to release the game in mid-2003
to late 2003.

Although the game will initially be an Xbox exclusive, a PlayStation 2
version and a GameCube version will follow. It is known that Sega is looking
into the possibility of implementing cross-platform online racing as part of
its console agnostic online stance.

The content of Daytona is expected to be a much enhanced version of previous
games, with a load of new tracks, several old favourites and fully
customisable cars, with players able to design and re-design their racer's
shell.

Leagues and organised one-off events are also planned for the game.

We'll bring you a full update as soon as we can and, as ever, remember where
you read this first!

now if this so called info had only been on Spong.com, I would tend to
dismiss it. However, other sources mentioned almost the same thing, most
notably, Stinger Report:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/
____________________________________________________________________________
_____________
" The Yu Suzuki managed AM2 team has revealed that they are working on
Daytona 3 (tentatively name Daytona Live). The game is targeted squarely at
the Xbox console and its 'Xbox Live' network playing system. The company
hopes to develop a racing game that will be truly 'multiple platform' with
players on one system able to compete across a newly developed network
system with players on another unit in LAN games."

" Regarding amu***t application of Daytona 3, especially in light of other
SEGA sequels missing arcade development (Ferrari F355 Championship 2, Crazy
Taxi 2 and Monkey Ball 2) no official statement has been made on a release
date for a arcade version, though a late 2003 date has been intimated for
the Xbox version. "

Am I the only one hoping that there was some truth to the above reports?

obviously that info is now years old, circa 2002.  yet recently, there have
been rumblings of a new Daytona appearing on Sega's new highend arcade board
that uses a new custom PowerVR graphics chip. maybe Daytona 3 is getting the
nextgen treatment and will appear on Xbox2, as well as PS3, sometime in the
coming year(s).

dispite my above question, I know there are thousands out there that would
give their right arm for new *solid* Daytona release.

A new Daytona would be awesome!  I really enjoyed the Saturn and Dreamcast

This is part that tells me the story is bogus. It's perfectly
plausible for the game to be on Live.. but cross-platform online? not
going to happen. Not because it's not technologically possible, but
because it's totally contrary to MS's principal of a closed network,
which is what Live is. The whole purpose of Live is so that MS can
control online ***. They might allow cross PC-XBOX *** (I don't
know of any but its possible), but no way in hell are they going to
allow outside networks, especially ones controlled by their
competitors, to be able to connect with games on Live.

Fixed your post.

Christ. The only thing more unreliable than a Spong article is a Spong
article more than a month old. Sometimes I swear they're actually a ***
news satire site.

I heard that also. I hope it's more than just another rumor....
