...heaven knows, this NG could do with a bit of light relief.

Anyhow: how about a steam car sim? Don't laugh (much) - in the early
years of the 20th C, they were forever breaking records - the "Jamais
Contente" held the Land Speed Record for a while. Hey, just think, you
could race around hotlapping[1] the Gordon Bennett tracks or summat...

[1] Argh! I used the words "hotlapping" and "racing" in close
proximity. I grovel in utter submission at my terrible act.

I agree with your idea of "***" sims but the jamais contente was electric
and not steam, BTW it is the first car ever driven above 100 kph.

Tried it......:-), kinda enjoyed it, driving the "Orient Express"
through the Austrian Alps (that's the mountains for you geographically
challenged :-) as well as the "Flying Scotsman".....somewhere :-)

I can't really imagine shelling out 50+ dollars for this one though as
there's very little to keep my interest going....I mean, how much can
you shave off your lap times when you have a schedule to keep :-))), but
you know me, if it's got wheels and I don't have to push it, I'll race
it....or something

Beers and cheers

M$TS is a real blast.  It really seems to be drawing in a real
cross-section of simmers too.  I've seen quite a few Flight Simmers in
the MSTS ranks as well as numerous racing sim folks, like Marc Nelson &
Bruce Kennewell(!).  I'd wondered what happened to 'ol Bruce. <g>  I got
it on sale the first week for $30, don't think I'd pay the MSRP of
$54.99 either but 30 was well worth it.

Well I'll let him know, he'd be pretty keen. What kind of setup
options are available? Shock/spring setups? And is there an F10 view?

Nah.  I reckon the trains are IROC because they run fixed setup. <g>
But you *do* have a timetable to meet with the passenger activities, and
also plenty of freight switch & set out if your into the down & dirty
stuff.  More & more 3rd party skins & routes are coming out, and anyone
with access to 3ds Max can design their own locomotive.  If not,
http://www.train-sim.com/msts/forum.htm has plenty of downloads
available. (Free registration required)  The sim comes with it's own
track editor.  Sure wish GPL/N4 did!

If you wanted to (mis)spend far too much of your free time you could play
around with the data files for the trains, etc.  I saw one where the engine
force had been upped by a factor of about 10^5 - the Flying Scotsman lived
up to its name at that point! :)

Huh - in the UK, MS Train Sim is 50 *pounds* - greatly overpriced, but
it's still up there in the charts. Odd.
