I'm upgrading my system, and have been talked into getting:

New ATX case 350w $50
Gigabyte GA-6VTX mainboard $96
Intel Celeron 1A 1 Gig cpu $105
256 megs of PC133 memory $75
GeForce 2 Titanium 64 megabyte graphics card $100

Sound is on the board, but can be disabled via the BIOS.

Is this a pretty compatible and stable system?

Thanks in advance...

Jim,

Might want to consider an AMD solution.  Could get a faster processor.  I
switched from Intel to AMD last year.  Recently upgraded with AMD again, and
couldn't be happier.

AMD all the way.  I was an Intel man for 10 years.  Put together an
AMD 1600XP and could not be happier.  Was able to unlock it to run as
a 1800XP.  Better performance than a P4 2.0

Thanks Bob G and Intrepid!

I did some checking around and found that I could get into the AMD Duron 1.3
Gig for less money than the Celeron.

ASUS KT133A mainboard: $109
AMD Duron 1300 Socket A + fan: $102
256MB PC133 SDRAM: $62
ATX Mid Tower 300W case: $51
ASUS V7100 Pro GeF2 MX400 32M Video Card: $75

Total investment: $399

Thanks guys!

While you're at it, go for 512 on the RAM.  You'll not regret it later on
when the prices rise.

get another mainboard with the KT266A (the A is important)...I would
recommend the MSI or the epox.

The only reason to go for a P4 these days would be the 2.2. Nohing much
touches it (at the moment!).

says...

For cheaper.  The celeron really is the dog of chips, plain and
simple.  The Duron, AMD's lower priced chip, runs cheaper for the same
MHz, and is superior to boot.

Also, your prices seem a bit high.  Newegg.com has the 1GHz
celeron for $67 + $6.95 shipping.  (And Newegg is about the best company
I've done business with online.)

I'd also advise against that GF2 solution.  If you really want an
nvidia solution, at least go with a GF3 TI200.  Or wait for the GF4MX.

Prices have been rising.  They will fall again.  RAM prices will
always, in the long term, fall.
