NR1999 POP UP!

NR1999 POP UP!

by Sal V » Thu, 10 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Well after just wasting a whole night doing a comparison between NR1999 &
N2, It's quite clear that the graphics "pop up" is much worse in the new
NR1999. I compared almost all of the tracks in both Rendition & 3Dfx with
identical settings, only to find the same dissappointing results. Much more
POP UP in NR1999.

Testing on a PII333 with a Thriller-3D 8meg Rendition and a Creative Labs
Voodoo-II with 12megs. All graphics turned "on" showing 39 cars up front, 3
in back & 4 cars heard. I set "track texture" to "auto" and min. / max frame
rate to 30 but track texture never even blinks! It's safe to say the sim is
running at 30 FPS.

Anyone else noticed this?

Yes, my Pii-333mhz (scrapped the Thriller 8mb PCI card - horrible 2d compared
to my Matrox Mill II 8mb AGP) w/CL Voodoo2 12mb PCI.

With same settings; 39 opponents drawn ahead, all graphics on (fence to auto)
min/max set at 30fps.. no blinking of the fence at all.  The pop up usually
starts at T1 of the track and gradually builds as the cars come around. The
fence never blinks so I know the fps is 30.  Don't know what will fix this
problem.

Kent,

I think what he means here is that the track draws or renders itself as you
go around the track.  I have NR99 and have noticed this also.  While moving,
if you look ahead a bit you will see the graphics being drawn.  It is really
not very professional looking: I have never seen this type of thing before
in any 3dfx accelerated game.

I do not know what I am talking about, this is just a theory. NR 1999
was built on the NASCAR 2 game engine. Remember that when NASCAR 2
came out, a p100 with 16 megs of RAM was a hotrod system. Computers
then were (as a rule) not powerful enough to load the entire track and
all trackside objects into memory without seriously impairing
performance. So, to keep the frame rates satisfactory, the track is
loaded bit by bit. I you look at N2, you'll see the same pop-up. NR
1999 is  just NASCAR 2 with some minor changes, more tracks and
trucks.
Cheers,
Chris
