BUMP STOPS in F1RS -- how do they work?

by Keith Cals » Wed, 16 Sep 1998 04:00:00

OK, I know I'm going to make myself look like an idiot but...hey...I'm
not above that.  Anyway, here's my question.  I'm taking a stab at
setting up my car in F1RS.  I have the car set up well for Monza but I
keep scraping the pavement on the large bump on the "back straight."

I decided that I should use Bump Stops to keep the car from hitting
the ground but I can't figure out how to configure them.  I started
setting it to around 4mm because I thought that they would hit 4mm
before the ground.  I decided that made no sense so I chose 46mm (on
the back where the car hits) since the ride height at the back is
50mm.  This didn't work either.   Instead of bumbling further I
thought I would ask the experts.

So please help if you can!
Thanks,

The bump *** limits the suspension travel. In F1RS you can use up to 40
mm packers. The scale is in percentage so 50% means 20mm...
How far can the suspension go with a given amount of packers? Well, if you
have set the ride height to 50mm and put on 100% packers (40mm!), you have
got 10 mm left for suspension travel. When you move at high speed (yes,
like the backstraight at Monza) your suspension goes much further than
that. THis means the suspension is on the packers. This means fully stiff,
and low grip levels, when you plan to brake and turn, you should be OFF
the packers.
The amount of packers you need depends on:
1) The wing setting. A higher wing means more travel
2) The weight of the car (much fuel makes the car scrape)
3) The spring setting. A stiff spring will make less suspension travel

For reference, I use rear springs 65%, Rear wing 1 and packers 60%. This
keeps the car body off the ground.

Hope this was of help (darn good explanation if you ask me... ;-)

Thank you very much!  That really was an excellent explanation.  I
feel like such a dunce.  I didn't realize the number I was changing
was a percentage.  Doh!

Well, gotta head back to Monza!  Wooohoo!

I have not seen bump ***s used in modern formula or sports racer cars
for a few years now so it seems odd that F1RS would have them.
Usually the spring rate is increased  and or shock adjusted.

I guess the modern F1 cars have such an enormous pressure from the wings (3-4
times the weight of the cars) that you do indeed need packers to keep the body
off the ground. Increasing the  spring stiffnesses instead would ruin the grip
in the slower corners and/or bumps. Usually, there are one or two points where
the car touches the ground (you know, when you go under that bridge on the back
straight at Monza), so being on packers in these few places is ok, so long as
the driver is aware  of it... One can even be on packers in the high speed
turns, simply because the wings press the car so firmly to the ground that
fully stiff is quite acceptable (the driver gets a hell of a ride,
though...)...
