GPL...just begin again...

Noticing that I'm still at the bottom of GPLRank, I've made a momentus
decision. I've thrown out the automatic transmission! I spent the
afternoon getting used to the idea at Monza and shaved -2- seconds off
my PB! I'm down to 1:35:something, but it feels very much like my first
couple of weeks with GPL. More to think about...controlling the car and
shifting and braking and
accelerating...whoops!...OUCH!...Shift-R...(repeat)

Haven't made it around Spa yet without crashing out, but I can tell that
once I get a handle on it, I'll be going -way- faster. Defenitely more
control of my speed and handling at Monza. Tried Monaco once, but that's
still -way- too much to do at once at this point in my career. Oh yeah!
I qualified 2nd at IMS, right behind (4 secs.) Clark, too. Freaked me so
badly that I blew the first lap in spectacular fashion. I've saved the
weekend and will try again when I'm a little more settled in.

I should be getting the Celery 533 system this month, (up from the
P166), so that should help as well. Once the frame rate is up, I'm
looking foreward to VROC...maybe some F2...?

In the meantime, could someone slower than me (if there is
someone...8^)...) -please- post their player to GPLRank? 'Til then, it's
heavy on the rank for me. I think I've just extended the life of my GPL
installation by a year or two. Ah well, it's the journey more than the
destination. And the destination? Anywhere but the bottom!

Oh, have I mentioned that I really enjoy GPL?

Back to Spa...

Congratulations on shucking the automatic transmission, now your getting
into the real fun of the sim. And your right, once you get the hang of Spa,
you'll have a blast at it - definitely my favorite track.

Good call. Get rid of any other help your using as well, they actually slow you
down in the long run.

WOW. You've been playing on a 166? That explains it all. Things are going to
get sooooooo much better!

You'd have to if your doing it on a 166. You know what you are now? Motivated.
And motivation means practice, and practice means progress in gpl. Your going
to climb that list so fast your nose is going to bleed!
See you on VROC J.P.

For a guy running on a 166 and the abysmal framerate you must be getting and
the fact that you are a newbie at this, I'd say that your times are pretty
impressive. Keep it up and you'll get there soon enough bud.

I just joined and had a question.  Along with my times is a column with the
header "type".  The listing are P, R, and T.  What do those stand for?

Thanks,
Charlie

Hey Charlie:

P,R and T stand for Practice, Race and Training, respectively.

Tony.

I tried ... but I came in at 3rd bottom - however I've started moving
upwards after addressing my woefully awfull PB at the 'ring (basically
I'd only ever done 4 or 5 laps there) - even though my PB is still
pretty bad and can be improve a lot more there's a nice sense of
achievement in doing a few laps to get to know the track better and
seeing the PB fall by over 2mins!

GPLrank is a great idea - sort of halfway house between trying to grind
down PBs and online racing. Prior to this I was spending too much time
trying to get the elusive (at least to me) <1:30 at Monza - now with GPL
rank I can have more general targets (e.g. handicap less than n or try
to get ranking #x) which will require running all tracks.

Anyway, clear at the moment that the only way to improve significantly
is to get my 'ring time down. Previously I'd never really looked at it
because it took so long to get around - however now after a couple of
sessions of 4 or 5 laps each I'm starting to recognise its "pattern" and
suddenly its becoming great fun.
