I think a lot of people are about to belittle you :)

But seriously, it's not just coincidence that, at least as my newsreader
is sorting messages, two posts in a row are about the same thing -
the hardness of GPL.  I certainly find it hard.  I might be happy just
driving around slow and safe except everyone seems so serious
about it, I wonder how much I'll have to practice just to have fun
races online.  But after practicing the same track for a while, sometimes
I go around the track cleanly a few times in a row with the tires
squealing, knowing I was on the edge almost the whole time, and
think that the effort may well be worth it.

I guess the consolation is that there are already 100s of other
'pedal to the metal' type racing games out there that can be
enjoyed instantly.

Hi,
I think one of the things that will make GPL enjoyable is it's
difficulty and realism.  At least most of us won't be able to make fast
laps right away.  We'll actually have to practice a lot to do well.  it
will probably be very satisifying to do a crash free/good lap on any of
the tracks, especially the 'Ring!  Hopefully, when good setups are
developed by the fast people, some of the people who find GPL difficult
to drive will have a little better time with it.  I don't think you will
be able to get away with using someone else's setup in GPL, because
indvidual driving style will be very important in this sim.

John

Hello,

All the buzz about GPL having the truest and most realistic simulation
physics is cool.  But from playing the demo and from what I read from
other people, the game is just a bit too realistic and too hard to
enjoy.

What do you think?

This is a matter of what your intentions are. If you plan to use a racing "game"
casually then GPL, in a GP1 car with no aids will not make you happy. If you want a "sim"
you can get your teeth into and not be kidding yourself about how good a sim racer you are
by beating the AI in NFS or something, then GPL is easily choice #1!

True it hard to get the hang of but when you do a good lap it
is very satisfying. Also bare in mind the car setup in the
demo is a bad one. Wait until you get the chance to modify the
setup to suit your driving style.

You are right - it is not _easy_, but how easy do you think driving a 67 GP
car was?  Not very, I imagine <g>.

And yet, in some ways, the GPL physics engine is easier to drive than NASCAR
2's because the model is more accurate - it "feels right".  In certain
situations, NASCAR 2 would be quite frustrating since there were certain
aspects of that model that were wrong, or at least deficient.

True enough,,
That took me awhile to figure out,, 'oh yeah, you don't have to slam
the pedal down All the way...' at least not in this game, even on the
straightaways you can fishtail at 130mph!
I'm kinda surprised that everybody is all upset about this game being
too hard, sure I'm pretty nervous about driving the Nurburgring just
once without eating some haybails,, but remember , Jim Clark did this
one in the rain,, and set the track record.(but probably not in the
rain..)..,,
I've played PC games that were just too damn hard, and I won't waste
my time if one is, after all ,it is a game. But GPL is so fun, and so
challenging,,, it makes it well worth it when I pull a decent time. I
found it hard to get used to, but now it's not such a big deal.
If you  want to drive a Lotus like the old-school heroes did, then
fine, play GPL... if you want to be Senna, play GP2,  if you want to
race Zanardi and knock him into a tirewall for a change, play ICR2.
They're all pretty different and this one is as original as they come.

These guys back then did'nt have a choice of whether the car was too
hard to drive or not, they just drove.

see ya there

Yes, it is true.  Do not buy this game.

Geez, what do want me to say?  I mean we don't know you, and you don't know
us.  How can strangers comment on other stranger's driving abilities?

As I was about to dump this rather boring, race by oneself game. I
changed the number of computer drivers from 9 to 19. Now there were
drivers actually slower than I was. Being slower allowed me to keep up
and learn from the back of the pack AI, in external view. Saved this
game for me and still get a decent 26 fps on my Ren V2100 board.
Looks like Papy will get my money after all.
