Generally, you can't have both a dedicated game card and your soundcard
gameport active at the same time. It will cause conflicts, as you've
experienced. I run Win95, but I don't think that this changed with Win98.
I have a Logitech Wingman Extreme joystick, an MS gamepad, a TSW racing
wheel (pedals only, since I use an LWFF wheel connected to the serial port
with it)., and a MIDI keyboard hooked to my system. The way I do it is
through an A-B-C-D joystick port switch. I manually select the device with
the switch, then change the active controller in Windows 95 Control Panel.
(I don't have to do the 2nd part to use the MIDI keyboard). The A-B-C-D
switch is connected to the gameport of my SB Live card. This set up has
worked fine for me for quite some time.
Believe me, if it works for me with all this STUFF hooked up, it should work
for almost anyone.
Unfortunately, I've never seen an A-B-C-D or even an A-B switch at a retail
store. I bought the one I have at a local computer show for about $20. I
usually don't recommend buying a lot of stuff at these shows, but they
generall do have a lot of hard-to-find gizmos.
One last thing, if you buy a switchbox, don't get an electronic one that
"automatically" detects whichever controller you want to use. Get a
mechanical one with a knob that clicks each selection. They're cheaper and
much more reliable in my opinion
Hope this helps.
