Which year can Geoff Crammond get an F1 license from FIA to simulate? Is there
any licenses left?

/Christer, a bit worried :o)

Christer,
The FIA will hand out licenses to anyone who'll pay them enough. This is the world
of big business - hell they even bought the goverment of the UK with a $1 million
donation to the Labour party (having previously hedged their bets by donating to
the Conservatives) and are now the only sport in the UK allowed to carry cigarette
ads.

Are you saying that we could see three sims next year that are licensed as
F1 1998?

GP3 better not have grooved tires. GP3 should be F1 1992! Back when they
actually went fast.

91 would be better as its always better to have a level field of
competitors in a sim. If it was based on 1992 it'd be all Williams,
Williams, Williams.

Psygnosis "claims" to have the only license for 1998.  We'll see.

I'd love to see a season that Fangio drove in, but that's probably a follow
up for GPL. 1955 for example, when he drove a Daimler-Benz or 1956 when he
drove a Ferrari. Sterling Moss said he could win driving a rusty nail - it'd
be nice to sample those cars! How would Fangio have fared in modern cars? How
would Schumaker have done in those days. One thing's for sure, you could
never imagine Schumaker, Senna or Prost "letting" another driver win - as
Fangio did for Moss at Aintree in '55. Not only arguably the greatest driver
of all time, but a gentleman to boot.

I'm sure the shots of F1RS2 that have been published have 98 cars in the
pics. Wonder if they'll change the handling characteristics to reflect
the grooved tyres and 'skinny lizzies' (notice how no-one's called them
that since the season began? Wonder why...)

Does one need a license at all? Just remember all the wrong
driver names that came with F1GP...

Personally, I'd go back one more year, to 1991 - ironically, the year
used in the original F1GP/World Circuit.  I don't think I've ever been
so entranced by a racing season in my life.  There were what, at least
six guys who could win races that year, maybe eight, depending on
circumstances.

If you go for 1992, and make it realistic, then nobody should keep up
with the Williams.

Apparentl so, uwe, if one is going to use the genuine names for
individuals, teams, sponsors, suppliers and circuits.
Also it is necessary to have the rights to use the term "FIA" and
"Formula 1".
The term "Grand Prix", however, is in general use as it is also used to
describe many other sporting events.

Oh, I'm looking forward to GPL as well - but I was born in '67, so I
don't have what you'd call "vivid memories" of that season.  I'm just
looking for the best possible sim of F1 as it was from the late '80s
through the early '90s, at the height of the 3.5l era, but before the
electronics took over.

My vote is for the '80s "Turbo era", seemed quite exciting.  Was real fun in
the old (and I'm dating myself here) "Ferrari Formula 1" by EA and "Grand
Prix Circuit" by Accolade on the ol' C-64, a "Turbo" sim would be a blast on
modern systems.
