I just read a story that AOL in the UK was going to offer 0800 number
(i.e. no per minute charges) access for 14.99 per month.

They've probably had this forever in the US but if the story is true it
will certainly be a big deal over here - Being albe to play online for
as long as you want - no charge, thats just unprecidented.

Mark,

Check out x-stream (http://www.x-stream.co.uk) for an ISP that provides free
calls.  God knows how busy it'll be, though.

Well, for the UK readers, you can always try www.screaming.net as long
as you have a BT phone line and are willing to change your telephone
account to localtel. They are offering free off-peak weekday and all day
weekend calls to the screaming.net access number, as well as no monthly
charge. Go to you nearest Tempo superstore for a free CD.

Note that I'm talking about no telephone charges whatsoever I.e. using
freephone numbers
and not (necessarily) no subscription charges.

Well thats okay if you have a BT phone line (I don't), why should I change
my entire
phone supplier anyway. And who is Tempo it is certainly not a superstore in
the UK, if so it must
be a very small chain.

Wait a bit longer and I think most UK ISP's will be offering free local
calls.

Remember Freeserve and X-Stream pioneering no fees, everyone followed, now
X-Stream, AOL and Screaming are offering free calls, everyone will have to
follow, hopefully including Freeserve etc.

UK LOL sucks! Or it did a year ago when I spent 2 days on it while Demon's
registration server was down.
AOL was my first experience of the net (at home) and it was a miracle if my
connection lasted 20 minutes at a time.

Freecall UK are offering 20,000 signups to 0800 access...
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
The 'catch' being you get sent adverts 2-3 times a week (by e.mail so it
doesn't kill your online ***). I can live with that.

If you have no-one elses name to put in the referrer box please be kind &
put mine (Paul Brogden)

It's been reported by several of the various online magazines, such as
Computer Shopper, and has been mentioned elsewhere too.
