I remember that Jim Garner wore an Amon helmet look-alike in the movie.

I guess McLaren drove as Garner's double. Right?

Actually i think Phil Hill did most of the driving.  Im not positive though.  I
know he did almost all in-car work.  Not sure about doubles for the drivers.

If I remember correctly, Phil Hill's primary role in "Grand Prix" was
driving the camera car (not to mention his fine acting performance as
Jim Garner's teammate at Yamura ;-)). They also used his feet (and one
other driver - was it Bob Bondurant?) for the shots of the footwork
which were filmed later at Riverside.

Actually Garner did most of his driving himself! He said he was "getting
quite good at it by the end". Although apparently Antonio Sabato
(Barlini in the film) was too scared to drive above first gear :-)

Right.  Garner is apparently a very good driver, for an actor (as was
Steve McQueen).

Same with Brian Bedford, the actor who played Scott Stoddard.  I believe
he didn't even have a driver's license!

Yes in the filming sequences with all the actors Garner did his own
driving.  Infact in a Road And Track Article aobut it they mentioned that
Garner was so fast they would have to space everyone out so they could get
the shot they wanted since Garner had toruble holing position.  The race
sequences shot from the actual race was where they had drivers whereing
different helmuts and also painting the cars.  Its an interesting story if
you can get the copy of Road and Track that has it in it.

Egan's Law

The Pace car will always go 2 MPH slower then your race car idles in first
gear.

McLaren's car was painted in "Yamura" colors for much of the '66
season.    I wouldn't say he was Garner's double, but more like his
stand-in for the actual races.
