Test Drive 3 too fast! Also.. mouse??

?I ran this program for about 5 minutes, put it on the shelf, and never
?touched it again. Crap.

Excuse me, but before you go off on it, you should at least
be aware of the fact that the game is about 5 years old.  In its time,
it was one of the best games around.  Let me guess, you thought it was
some kind of NFS clone, right?  :)

Sorry to disagree with you Evan, but even back then Test Drive
three was ***:-).  It was the first (and last) Test Drive that was NOT
designed by the fine folks of Distinctive Software (better known today as
EA Canada).  Frankly, I thought the Test Drive series had gone way down
since TD2 (despite the addition of 3D graphics, sound card support, VGA,
windshield wipers, et cetera).  Sure it was fun having some choice in
what path to take ('Vette was good in this respect), but most drivers
would usually end up off-roading in the Pinin Farina.  Idiotic!
TD3 was done by the same people who made R&T: Grand Prix
Unlimited, probably the worst F1 "simulation" of all time.  Indy 500 on the
Atari 2600 was a lot more fun...
Now Stunts, on the other hand...  There's a game that's still on
my hard drive!

: (please respond to email, sporadic access you know ;)

: I picked up Test Drive 3 not long ago, being one of the sims ive wanted
: to see for years.  On a 486SX/25 its WAAAY too fast!  (Goddess forbid
: when I pick up a P100-P166! ;)  Switching the turbo switch to the 8Mhz
: position however is ridiculously slow for some reason.

Despite its mildly-interesting kitsch value, my advice for you is
to move on.  Either try NFS or, if you're feeling nostalgic, try TD2 or
Stunts for a much better experience.  Try hard and look for
TD2:California/Euro Challenge, plus the Muscle Car set.  Great fun!
Test Drive 3, on the other hand, was one of the most disappointing
sequels ever.

: Also, on the cover there was a sticker which claimed mouse wheel support,
: yet I cant figure out whether it exists on there or not.  Has anyone else
: used this program?

The rightfully-dead mousewheel worked on the same principle as
the lamented mouse-stick.  Some genius thought that you could strap a
mouse onto a device that would translate the wheel/stick motions into
mouse ball motions.  The product was known for its inaccuracy, tendency
to drift/skip, et cetera.  The only good thing about it was that it came
with Stunts!
Its modern equivalent would probably be that idiotic
mini-joystick that's shaped like a gun.  Anyone know what I'm talking about?

: Say, while im already posting about it ;), has anyone ever seen any
: add-on scenery or car disks for this program?

I've played the Cape Cod scenery disk that includes the Dodge
Stealth and the Acura NSX.  It's basically more of the same.  I will
admit that the scenery was really nice for its time, much better than the
stock scenery in TD3.  Lots of autumn colors, churches, driving on
jetties.  You also get to drive the only simulated version of the Dodge Stealth
, an awful car that will be discontinued next year.
If you liked TD3, you'll probably like Cape Cod though!

Hi,

Actually, I don't think TD3 was ever considered to be a great game, unlike
it's predecessors, TD1 and TD2.  I remember being at the store all set to buy
it and saw the box for Stunts- from the creators of TD1 and TD2.  From what
I can remember, TD1, TD2, Stunts, and NFS were all created by the same people.
TD3 was produced by Accolade, but not by the same programmers as these other
games.  That, to me, explains the difference between the games.  Also, the
fact that the game TD3 sucked- helps too!  ;)

Would you mind telling me where I can download the patchs?

I have only the Yosemite -...somewhere track, are extra track packs out?
