"Nascar 4 appears to be installed incorrectly...Please try re-installing again"... HELP

by John Wehma » Tue, 06 Mar 2001 10:18:16

Well, I've tried 6 times in a row now...nothing appears to work.  Whenever I
get to the end of the install process, there is a "serious" error (Windows
box) and something like "Can't create folder" or something.

Then, the Papyrus folder goes away.  I can install it on my other box
(Win98) and it runs fine, but this one just won't work.  I've even copied
the installed folder from that box over to mine, and run it, and at the
startup screen, it says "Nascar appears to be installed incorrectly...blah
blah" and then quits out.

My specs:

AMD Athalon700
512MB
Win2K
DX8.0a
GeForce DDR (7.xx drivers)

Help???

TIA,

John Wehman

Make sure that the files in the game directory have not been assigned
"read-only" attributes. Also mnake sure your CD Key got entered
properly.

You'll need to make sure you're an admin when installing on a Win2000
machine.

"Nascar 4 appears to be installed incorrectly...Please try re-installing again"... HELP

Thanks for the replies (Mort and Eric)...just FYI, I am the administrator of
the machine (it's the only profile I set up) and all the files are
"Archive".  Also, since I tried this machine 6 times and failed every time,
and the one time I tried it on the Win98 machine it went smoothly, I'm
guessing I'm entering the CD-Key correctly.  The annoying thing is it gets
all the way through setup, to the point of asking if you want ATT shortcuts
on the desktop (but not as far as asking if you want N4 shortcuts) before
barfing with that Win dialogue box about not being able to create a folder.

If I break into the OS at that point (hit the "Windows" key), I can see the
file structure, and I've even copied the folder to another name, so that
when I go back to the install program and click "Yes" or "No", and the error
comes up and erases my Papyrus folders, I've got a copy of it already saved.
But, when trying to load that program ends up with the message in the title.
Same message as when I installed it on Win98, copied it over to Win2K and
tried running it.

Something funny with N4 and trying to run under my system (which is pretty
standard and runs every other game with no issues).

Thanks again,  I guess this goes back to Soft. etc.

Regards,

John Wehman

John, I would think that since we have not really heard of this problem
before and plenty of people are using N4 on NT and Win2K machines.. that it
probably has something to do with your settings on that machine.

It would be a shame for you to take it back when it more than likely is not
a problem of N4 itself.

It might have something to do with their stupid ass copy protection.

If the install fails to complete the CD Key does not get saved to the
registry, and the game cannot run without it.

Yeah, you can't just drag around the N4 folder like we used to in the past.

I suspect it's due to some sort of copy protection crap.  It's screwed up
everything else with this game...

I would uninstall it with the uninstaller, then make sure the folder is
actually removed from the Papyrus folder.

Most uninstallers leave behind folders after an uninstall.

Make sure your user-specific stuff is backed up.

Good Suggesstion.

If you had burned your N4 folder to a CD as a backup, and then restored it,
most, if not all, of the files will now be set to read-only.

"Nascar 4 appears to be installed incorrectly...Please try re-installing again"... HELP

by wrt.. » Thu, 08 Mar 2001 22:52:02

I had the same problem and went thru the install
process about 5 times.  I finally minimized the install
box right after the install really started, and let it
finish as a minimized box.  Everything went OK, I did
not have the "N4 appears to be installed incorrectly"
error any more.

The install/copy protection is crap, however.  Papyrus
should know better by now..
