Most F1 drivers left foot brake, but not quite all. Rubens Barrichello
is a known right foot braker for instance. From what I've heard it was
Mika H?kkinen who was one of the first to use it in F1.
In lesser formulas right foot braking is much more common(no
computerized rev matching), and certainly in GT racing also. Now, you
_could_ left foot brake anyway, by blipping the throttle without using
clutch, but it can be hazardous... Anyhow, that's how Jaques
Villeneuve claims he drove in the 1993 Toyota Atlantic series. They
had H-pattern gearboxes.
In rallying left foot braking has been around since the 60's,
primarily with the FWD SAAB's. It's a fairly brutal affair where you
provoke oversteer by mashing both gas and brake at the same time to
lock up the rear wheels. The 4WD driving technique is very similar to
FWD, rather than RWD, so left foot braking followed suit. Well, when
Stig Blomquist started driving the Audi Quattro anyway. He drove it
like a FWD car rather than a RWD car, like most drivers which at the
time came from Lancia Stratos or Ford Escorts.
I use left foot braking mostly because my pedals, like most pedals
I've tried, really don't allow for right foot braking. For it to work
for me the brake pedal has to be a lot firmer with less travel than
most have, and when fully on the brake the I'd like to slide my foot
over to the gas. Not possible on any I've tried. The Redlines and TSW,
I don't know about. Some say it's possible...
