Uninstalling GTR

Yeah, spot on.

Having made a bit of a mess with all the add-ons in GTR, I decided to
uninstall the game, (after backing up the user data directory of
course.) I would then only install the add-ons that worked properly, and
that I liked.

Uninstalling GTR from the CD took out the entire game okay, and also my
entire installation of GTL which was in the same root directory, as well
as a couple of other different games.

No recycle bin, no nothing. I'm not to bothered about GTR, as I was
going to start again anyway, but GTL... Countless hours down the toilet.

Spot on.

Sounds to me like it was the install that was wrong, GTR and GTL in the same
directory ;-)

If you're using Win XP can't you go back to an earlier checkpoint?

Andi.

Using XP, yes. System restore doesn't cover this sort of thing, IIRC.

GTR and GTL were both installed in C:\Program Files\Games... is that so
wrong? Not the default, which is C:\GTR, but I like to have things more
organised than the default.

Apparently.

Not the default, which is C:\GTR, but I like to have things more

Were the two programs 'installed' to your games folder or did you install
them and then move them to games?  That would be the only situation I can
think of that might***things up.  The registry would be looking in one
folder and the rest of the program is in another.

If you changed the install path to c:\games the programs will be in the same
directory. If you change the default install directory you need to change it
c:\games\GTR and c:\games\GTL

I thought XP recover would set a checkpoint before an after an install so it
would also do a change back after an uninstall - got to be worth a try
though.

Andi.

I think I might have moved one of them, GTR I think, but surly the
uninstall routine should be able to handle that. I'll give the system
restore a try.

When you install a program,  Windows writes to a file.  And the un-
installer uses that info to un-install.  Thus, when you move a program
AFTER installing, then windows cannot find it to un-install.
Same principle applies to extra cars or mods...Windows un-installs only the
files that were originally installed as noted in the installation log.  Any
extra cars or tracks are left
alone and Windows will 'say' it has deleted everything.  But if you try and
throw away the folder,  Chances are an error box will appear saying the
folder cannot be deleted since it still contains files.

Yes, I understand that, and if the uninstall routine wasn't able to do
it's job, I would also understand.

What actually happened when I clicked the uninstall icon on the CD was
that the entire contents of my C:\Program Files\Games directory was
deleted. All the games in there (4, including GTL & GTR) where gone - no
window opened, no progress bar, no "are you sure?" dialogue. All of
these games were in their own directory within the above.

That's a bit different than what one would expect, me thinks.
