Has anyone in here tried Star Wars - Pod Racers?  What is it
like?  Is it pure arcade?  Is there a demo to download
somewhere?

Reason i ask is because I dreamt about playing it the other
night and in my dream it seemed quite fun.  Now i'm interested
to find out:-)

First sorry for the bad english :-)

It's a BLAST!!! Really a fun game. The feeling of speed is excellent.
You can customize your pods via upgrade your purchase when you win
races. Each Pod have different qualities so you have to got the right
Pod for the race.

The tracks are very good. On the letdown some of them are a too twisty
for vehicles running at around 600mph.

A demo is available and it's around 16Mb (not that big). Try
www.avault.com in the download section.

You can find a review at the www.theuspits.com. This is a racing
simulation site. So you will have the feeling of a reviewer who like
real simulation. Here is a quote:

Well, I enjoyed this little diversion from the day to day tire temps,
wing angles, qualifying and fastlaps of
regular racing, just throw it in and go. No rating, as it's not your
run-of-the-mill racing sim, nor does it
compete against them. But if your in for a great afternoon of racing a
"long time ago, in a galaxy far, far
away", on strange worlds where you race side by side with creatures
who look somewhat like the
denizens of New York city streets at 3 AM in the morning, it's a
blast! And throw me a wave if you see
me catting down Interstate 10 in my pod, afterburners full on, curling
the paint on the hood of the cars as
I go by...  (Jan Kohl)

Hope it will help your decision.

No, it isn't arcade at all. It's the most realistic simulation of
Championship Interstellar Pod Racing, ( also know as ChiPer),  yet produced.
It is the GPL of Pod Racing sims.

It's a ton-o-fun! No sim, of course (except for buying some extra parts, you
don't really set up much of anything).

The best part is the TREMENDOUSLY fast reflexes needed on some of the higher
levels. Since the pods go much faster than any car, on a couple twisty
tracks you have to turn left and right an incredible amount.

A wheel is totally inappropriate (not fast enough). A gamepad is okay, but a
joystick is really the best.

I got it for my kids, but once in a while, I jump on it too. The movie was a
disappointment, but Racer is fun!

Here is a demo:

Its more like a flying-racing game I guess.
Pure Arcade??  Um, it is not simulating anything that is real.

The game is absolutely great. The graphics on most levels are stunning (some
are a lot better than the demo level, IMHO), and the sense of speed is very
intense. Combine this with the excellent LucasArt atmosphere, and you can't
go wrong. You're going to want a Force Feedback joystick for this game, like
the MS Sidewinder FF Pro.

I predict that your dreams will come true! :-)

It is an absolute BLAST! - I got a demo from PC Gamer but don't know
where or if one's available anywhere else...

The only real arcady part is the crashes - they aren't quite up to the
standard of the ones in the movie, but otherwise it's like playing the
movie.... seriously... the graphics and sound are (almost) as good as
the race scene the game is depicting. Hell, the intro alone is better
than a lot of games and if you sit through the whole thing (definitely
worth it) it lasts around 6 or 7 minutes - I haven't got my hands on
the full package yet, but it's very much on "the list"

If you can't find a demo anywhere, take a look at
http://www.pcgamer.com and go to thei demo area - might be available
there but expect a LOOOOOONG download if you find one - the one I have
installed onto the hd AND needs the cd it came on...
