New PC :)

This morning I ordered the guts of my new PC.  Athlon 950, 256 Megs RAM, 60
Gig RAID Array, 32 Meg DDR Radeon card, DVD, CDR/W.  I was happy.  Then I
log into the ras newsgroup only to find that N4 was released (apparently
today).  And to think, I was wondering what I was going to buy to show off
this new computer.   :)

Just out of curiosity, why are so many guys getting RAID setups? I can see
the use of RAID on a 24/7 operation, but for a home PC it just seems like a
waste of money.

If my HD dies I'll just buy a new one and restore from backup and/or
reinstall.

p.s. My P2 333 is seeming slower and slower... I remember the days when it
was the "recommended" spec, not the below the "minimum" on new games (:

Personally, I need the throughput for music recording.  Plus it's cool.

Oh, and I'm going to run a RAID 0, which offers no backup, just better
performance.  I'll back up to CD periodically.

In the old days, RAID (especially levels 3, 4 and 5) were very expensive.

I remember my 8GB Level-0 stripped array (SCSI) 4 years ago cost me $4200
and had a whopping sustained transfer rate of 14MB/sec.

Now, you can get the capability for nearly nothing on the Mainboard, and IDE
hard drives, already sustaining 15-20 MB/sec individually, are dirt cheap.

Why not do it?

One does have to keep in mind that IDE RAID isn't quite the same thing as
SCSI RAID.  The concepts are the same, but the same interface features IDE
was missing 4 years ago compared to SCSI are still missing today.  Command
Queuing and Disconnect/Reconnect are the two primary one's.  DMA has help
relieve the high processor usage of IDE drives, but it still isn't as low as
SCSI.

But, for the money, it's a goodie :)
