F1Demo at GamesDomain - Not complete?

In the readme file it says I should run install d to install the game,
but there is no install.exe!  And if I start f1.exe it starts ok, but
when I click on "play game" or something like that it sends me back to
DOS with the message "Error- cannot open file control1.set" I dont
remember if those are the exact words but anyway you see the problem.
I checked everywhere and there is no control1.set anywhere in the zip
file I downloaded from www.gamesdomain.com.  Anyone has any idea on
what I should do now?  Are there any other sites where I can get the
demo?  I really want it!

Antoine,

The readme file was written for the demo being on some demo cd.  What you
have to do is put the zip file in a directory \f1demo  on the root of
your hardrive.  Unzip it using pkunzip -d f1demo.zip . Go to the \TOF1DEMO
directory, run the setup, then copy the 2 .ini files and the 2 sound drivers
for you card, *.mid and *.dig, to the main game directory. It should run
then.

If possible, please identify the exact location of the GP2 demo.  I
looked in the www.gamesdomain.com site and could not find it.

thanks

It's there at the site. It's 3.5megs. It's called Full On F1, look for it in
the dos section, in the demos. It's a fun game, but kinda arcadish feeling (is
just a demo, so maybe some more realism will come with the game), if you are
diehard gp2 fan (count me on that list!), then this game might disapoint some
people.....

The demo is at:

http://www.gamesdomain.com/cgi-bin/dd.cgi?/directd/pc/dos/demos/f1dem...

It IS very arcadish - using a wheel, the dead zone at the center of steering
is very large, it's hard to keep it on the track.  Also, it's only VGA, but
looks like the final version could also have SVGA.  The sound on the starting
grid was excellent - in stereo, cars revving up all around you, from an actual
recording(for those who like to hear other cars!).  Final version could be
ok if it has SVGA and better control.

Don't know about CONTROL1.SET, I didn't have that problem, & I deleted the
whole thing after a couple of laps.

I wasted my time with this download as well!

Thanks! I decided to download it anyway, even after your advice that
it is arcade-ish. Might be fun.

In the mean time, let me just pass the word that I am thrilled with
the Playstation version of F1 (by psygnosis)- I bought a playstation
to play it, and it was worth it.

ok, that was easy- even thought eh program asks where you want to
install it, it really wants to be in one particular directory, f1demo
or some such. If you put everything there, the program will find it's
control1.set.

next, to get the sound working, you need to go in to the new
directories it has created, and empty the contents of one of the
(forgot which) in to the main f1demo directory, and run it's little
setup program. Sorry I am not more specific- I've erased it already.
You see, after all that, I couldn't get my car to move.I could steer
it, but what goood is that without some speed?

It looks pretty good, not as arcadish as i thought. Looks a lot like
GP2, but frankly, this version isn't quite there yet.

Look at the error message you get it says "can't open c:\f1demo\controlset1"

put the files in c:\f1demo and it will work, mine does except i don't get
sound which doesn't really bother me.

I figured that part out. What got me was that even in doing that I
couldn't control my car. I got sound. I could ride in other cars (just
like GP2). It wasn't bad, but it struck me (at least at this
preliminary stage) as a sort of "poor man's GP2." Anyway, it is nice
to see so much effort toward racing sims.

I really don't understand why it doesn't work for me...  I've
downloaded the demo twice just to make sure, and both zip files are
identical.  Here's what I did:

1- Downloaded the demo
2- Unzipped all files into \f1demo\ with the -d switch
3- got into the tof1demo dir and ran setsound.exe
4- copied the two .ini , and two other files (don't remember the exact
name but they are the two files related to your sound hardware)
5- went down to \f1demo\ and typed "f1" followed by the enter key.

I get to a screen where I can set up the controls, but when I click on
a button centered on the bottom of the screen wich should bring me to
another menu or whatever, It still tells me it can't find the file
CONTROL1.SET.  My question follows:

Does this file come from the zip file or is it created after the
installation?

I have never seen that file anywhere, no matter how hard I tried!  If
anybody understands my problem and knows a solution, please, I beg
you, HELP ME!!!

Sorry If my poor english made it difficult for you to understand what
I'm talking about, but it's not my first language (DUH!)...
