Best subject I could think of to describe my question..

Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL gives me this..
Composer: (this message)
Explorer:
Rmr: (assumed to be the Real Player program(?))
Fast Find: (assumed to be MS office(?))
systrey:

I'll assume (again) that I can free up a couple bit's of memory by
"end task" for the Rmr, and the Fast find.  And I know that "Composer"
wont be there while running GPL over the net.  What about Explorer? and
Systray?  Could I "end task" them also without screwing up anything?
I'm after every bit of ram, cache, cpu resources I can get.  Sorta like
Do you wax the car to get that extra thousandth of a second per lap or
not.

Next question:  I just got the cable modem a couple weeks ago.  Since I
took out my 33.6 modem I don't need the dial up networking.  By getting
rid of that would that free up a couple more bit's for online racing?

Hi,

The 'end task' method probably doesn't help at all. Win 95/98 has a very
bad memory manager and if you end the task via CTRL+ALT+DEL the task is
killed, but the memory isn't freed. You should really try and terminate
the programs the way they expect, or prevent them from starting up.

Hi Michael.  You definitely want to kill Fast Find and not just when
you're racing online.  This insidious program constantly polls your hard
disk and is a real performance killer in general, and could cause
disconnects online.  Just think of it as a virus from Microsoft. Delete
it from your Startup folder.

I don't know what Rmr is.  I don't see it on my machine. If it is the
Real Audio Player, it wouldn't hurt to kill the process.  I know that
when you install Real Audio, it puts an icon in the system tray.  This
means that there is a running application.  The Real Audio one is for
quicker starts of the player, which doesn't seem that useful.  I deleted
this from my system tray (right click on the icon and you will get a
context menu with that choice).

Do not kill systray and explorer!  These are part of the OS and need to
be running. The Explorer process is not just the Windows Explorer
interface, but is something at a lower level than that.  If you kill it,
your machine will most likely hang.  Systray has to do with the System
Tray (the box of icons for programs and events located in the task bar
at the bottom right of your screen).  Windows needs this to be running
as well.

It would free up space on your hard disk, but wouldn't impact what's in
memory.

Hope this helps,

Dave Ewing
