according to a worker at BAR, even though champ cars have a few more bhp
(and now its only something like 30hp more....in a car that weighs alot
more), a skiny, more aerodynamic and lighter F1 car would be able to lap
michigan a shade faster.  with regards to safety, i dont think theres a more
safe racing car around than an f1 machine at the moment (go over to the fia
web site to read the PDF on the tech rules that the teams have to follow,
esp in relation to crash testing, its all there).  the only dangers are in
t-bone situations, where the high nose could be a danger.

doubt very much that cart cars actually go quicker in a straight line than
F1 cars.....hell, coulthard was up to 220mph on a road course last year.

Remember that on large ovals the CART cars have the Hanford restrictor on
the wing. A qualifying lap at Fontana a few years ago (before the
restrictor) was 245 mph. Michigan has slightly higher banking. Unrestricted
a CART car might get to 265 mph now at Michigan.

Quite true, A CART car definitely has a better top end than F1. Just
the rest of it that is slower :(

Another thing to consider! Due to the effect of the Hanford device, drafting
has been causing the engines to over rev and fail at Michigan and Fontana.

Without the Hanford device, the afore mentioned CART car could do about 260+
and do it for 500 miles.

I don't think an F1 car would last very long at that speed. F1 is a bunch of
1/4 mile drag races between chicanes. Spa and USA being exceptions. They
don't let the cars run at max revs for very long. And at almost 22,000 rpm's
it is most likely a very good idea.

Hmmm, I've never heard figures that high before, most usually say
around 18-19,000rpm. But you never know whether these are accurate
figures, since the engine makers keep the real figures very close to
heart.

F1 engines are designed to do not much more than 300 kms, at the
limit. CART engines are a lot more forgiving, since they need to do a
lot more than that, and do not place such a huge emphasis on running
to the limit on weight, power, etc. A more sensible margin of error is
placed on CART engines, since reliability is such a big marketing
issue. So you get a more powerful and reliable CART engine, albeit
somewhat overweight compared to the F1 cousin.
