I find this an interesting topic - you can disable something that's
obviously enabled by default for a reason, and after that you have one
problem less.

However, why is it enabled by default? What exactly happens when you disable
it, and are there any negative side effects? Dave says I think his spotter
sounds a little raspy now after disabling streaming?

IL2 Sturmovik has that setting as well btw.

Can anyone shed some light on this matter?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, he sounds raspy now.

The streaming allows for slightly better sound quality and a lower
memory footprint for the game.  When disabled, all the spotter audio
samples must be preloaded into memory when you first visit a track to
race.

I can understand the memory footprint issue, but how can the sound
quality be improved if streaming is enabled if the same sound samples
are used.

I had some more freezes in this past weekends RASCAR races, although I
managed to get through them without incident (close your eyes for three
seconds down the front straight of Atlanta!). They happened when the spotter
said something unusual. For example, I set my tire change to only replace
the right side, and when the spotter informed me of what they'd do, that's
when I got the freeze. If all the spotter samples are pre-loaded with
streaming off, I wonder why I still got the freezes?
