N4 - fools driving on-line...

by Arto Wik » Sat, 07 Apr 2001 05:21:39

Hi,

I finally have been taking part to some on-line races. In N4
it works, GPL would be more interesting to me, but I cannot
make VROC go thru my firewall... :-(

But to my complaint: I took part to some Papy-"sponsored" race,
and the number of fools was big! After they made some mistakes
at the start, they tried to drive onto other drivers as much as
they could! And after they had ruined their own cars, they retired.
Why do some intentionally try to spoil other's race? I cannot get
the idea of the enjoyment those fools get from that! Pehaps they
are 7 years old guys? But I cannot even understand, why even those
would like that...

After the spoil-sports retired it was ok. Well, I was only 16th -
a couple of pit stops, 2nd time towed, because someone drove on to
me so fast that my car went upside down...

I know what you mean...but here is the way to help that problem.

Stick it out and run some races until you get your ratings up a few notches.
Then you can join races without the idiot crashers.  You can't get your
rating up unless you finish well consistently.

And from that point just stay away from the 0-10 races.

If your firewall allows you to set various ports and protecols, you could try these settings:
You may be able to reduce a bit but they seem fairly safe. The settings
are application specific, i.e. not generally available.

Protocol, local port, direction, IP, port.

WinVROC.exe:
UDP 6969        In/Out Any           Any
UDP 32766-32786 In/Out Any           Any
TCP Any         Out    216.7.136.5   Any
TCP 113         In     Any           Any
TCP Any         Out    Any           6667

GPL.exe:
UDP 6969-6971   In/Out Any           Any
UDP 32766-32786 In/Out Any           Any
UDP Any         Out    Any           6969-6971

I hope you can make sense of this. It has been tested for hosting and
driving.

Cheers,
Jens

Hi Three,  I have a question about the ratings.  Well these carry over
if Papyrus ever patches the sim or will we alllll start over and fresh with
zero rankings again?

My gut feeling is the rankings on Sierra will not be reset.

There are two thing to be considered; first of all, not everyone hits
other cars on purpose when they crash, sometime they just slide down the
track, for example, and directly into you. That can only be the case
right after the crash, though.

I do agree that there are plenty of childish racers there, though. Your
best cure is to stay away from the most popular tracks (Daytona,
Talladega; they're also boring as you never really drive on the limit),
and try to find races in places like Watkins Glen, Bristol and so on.
They're more exciting and more technical, and the number of wreckers and
railriders is considerably less.

It happens in real life too. You ever see Jimmy Spencer or Jerry Nadeau
drive!!
