NASCAR2: Any Dover Tips?

by Michael E. Carv » Sat, 14 Dec 1996 04:00:00

I have been working my way through the championship season at 100%
opponent strength and 33% length races.  So far I have been able to do
pretty good (excepting Sears Point where I need alot more time to
practice).  I've just gotten to Dover.  This is the first track where
the AI seem to be fast all the way through the field.  Usually I can
tweak my setup and learn a good groove around the track and make it to
the top 10 or 15.  However, Dover has me stumped.  Does anyone want to
share setup tips or driving tips for Dover?

MIcheal,

Have you tried downshifting to 3rd in the corners? It really helps to turn
the car off the corner. You want a car that's fairly loose to keep from
pushing out into the wall coming out of T4. Use the throttle to bring the
rear end of the car around. I'd send you a setup, but I lost all mine when
I installed the release version and haven't been back to Dover since. I
really like the N2 version of Dover, but T4 is definitely a bear.

Same problem for me.  I can turn consistent 149-150 laps - which is ok by
real life standards - but the AI cars can turn up to 156 - which is over
the real life qual record.  I can play around and abuse the car to turn a
quicker lap - but I can't get consistently quicker times.  Real loose can
help but forces you to drive a bit high through the turn (while catching
the backend) and come off the corners a bit straighter.  Problem with this
is you get cars under you coming off the corners consistently.
Downshifting might also get you down the straight a little faster - but
this is a tough proposition for 500 laps in traffic.  At the moment I have
detuned the AI to rels=101.  This gets them running laps at realistic
speeds for Dover (around 150-152).

It turns out that you can actually keep pace even at rels=103 while turning
a consistent 150 lap - because the AI cars vary their speed too much in
traffic.

What I found at Dover during testing was that the AI lap times fall off
fast after 30 laps or so. I won a couple of 35% races starting at the back
at 100% by saving tires and waiting for them to wear down their tires and
then making the move to the front. However, it's possible that Papyrus
adjusted the AI since I last raced Dover, and I could be all wrong about it
now.
