GPL, What a Simulation....

by Christian Girou » Fri, 27 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Hi everyone,
I was doing an offline race last night at Monza with
19 pilots. I qualified 2nd on the grid. At Curva Grande i was third, i kept
my concentration high since the Eagle behaved so-so on cold tires.

After the Vialone i was thinking "great still third, i'm doing fine", then i
lost the car in the Parabolica !!! I hit shift-R, then made a "stop & go" in
the pits (i understand that's the way they do it with online race and that
being my goal in the future).

I climbed my way up from 20th. to finished 7th. after a 21 laps race. I also
took the fastest lap (1'29,57"). I was a bit frustrated by my mistake in the
Parabolica, but after cooling down, it was a great way to practice passing
cars....

GPL is high up there on immersion with Longbow 2 & Apache-Havoc, for me that
is....

Thank you Papyrus...

Regards,

C. Giroux.

Hehehe, use the Longbow next time.... you are sure to win!

imagine a 100% race at any track, .... I start the race with 50% fuel ... at
midrace, i stop somewhere and Shift-R ...

I am again with 50% of fuel ...

is this fair ?  is a 0.0 sec pit stop  ....

someone using this ?

PS: I  never drive 100% races, it is only a question ...

Heh - I'd considered it since I typically crash off every third lap at
a course like Monza I only really need ever have three laps of fuel in
the car.  Don't do it of course because it would be cheating.

It's the practice in the GPLWS league.  It's a balance between PRO
races (with no reset and no recourse if you warp-crash or get crashed
out by another's actions) and just plain INT settings (the standard
reset doesn't give much of a penalty).  I haven't seen it in pick-up
VROC races.

nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into
a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark

This is indeed what some online leagues are implementing now, and indeed
i have been doing it in some  friendly online races too, because i feel
that the shift r is too big a copout if the fault was all mine.If it was
caused by somebody else then i might not do this :-)
I was in a race yesterday at kyalami in the lead ,coming round the last
corner my engine died,as if  a piston had gone or something, so i pulled
into the pits stopped and then pressed shift r and carried on to finish
4th.
I think its a great idea but im sure many wouldnt bother, but it gives me
peace of mind. I had always felt like i had cheated if i had done well
in a race where i had had to use shift r, and now i dont have to.

I wish I could tell who's fault it really was half the time.  Did I wink in in front
of the other driver or vice-versa?  Nothing more frustrating than dogging a driver
lap after lap and they finally lose it in a corner, so you go by giving them a wide
berth and next thing you know they materialize directly in front of your car.  Oh
well, I guess we've still got a ways to go before this is perfect, but it sure is
fun.

It will not. In the SRM Challenge http://www.simracingmag.com/ we will use
that method. You can just look on the replay to see if anyone as done wrong.
No problem at all.

I'm pretty sure he meant in pick-up races, not league.

I've done it accidentally - meaning I didn't PLAN it that way.  I started a 21
lap race once withoug checking my fuel.  After about 5 laps, I remembered that
I was using a setup for about 11 laps...  When the engine faltered, I pulled
over, and hit Shift-R.  At that point, I really didn't have a CHOICE.
However, I think the benefits of running with a lower fuel load would be offset
by having to STOP, then start again on cold tires...

WOuldn't that depend on the weapons load?  You could LITERALLY blow away the
competition...<g>g
