Ferrrari vertical lift off at the ring - check it out !!!

by JDP » Fri, 16 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I wonder if Papy has it physics all the way right.
Last night i was vertical airborne for about 10 feet at the ring (karussel).

Check it out !!!
if you want to see it I have a great replay of it (300 kb), just mail me.

BTW : GPL Gives me the shivers after playing it for 2 days. I can't quit
improving and testing. I took some holiday time at work to spend on this
great game.

Race greetings,

Jimmy

Physics are pretty strange critters.  For an example, check out
www.petitlemans.com, PICS section, I think 3rd page.  I was at Road Atlanta
that day and got to watch physics (aerodynamics, actually) turn a
million-dollar GT1 factory Porsche into scrap.  I'll bet Yannick Dalmas is
STILL scratching his head over it.  That was a wild one.

P.S.  That handed it to Ferrari, in the end.  They sounded even better than the
ones in GPL.

If Papy could reproduce in reality some of the effects GPL shows, then
then they would win the Nobel Price ...

I caused some head-on crashes, and some were really wild:

In Monaco, my car screamed backwards around the U-turn at the harbour
along the wall all the way to the chicane, at 250km/h. It seems the
throttle often gets stuck during a crash, the engine revving,
sometimes even the suspension is rocking and rolling like crazy.

In Rouen, after crashing into the cars in the pitlane at around
200/kmh, my car shot in the air vertically like a rocket, then crashed
against the invisible "sky's the limit" in a height way over the
Grandstands, 50m or so.

Woooaaa, seen it on TV yesterday. Exactly like the flip Manfred
Winkelhock did in his Formula 2 at the Ring's Quiddelbacher Hoehe in
the early 80s when his front wing was damaged.
I wonder why the Porsche got airborne suddenly? Maybe the floor got
damaged while running over some curbs, and the ground effect got lost?
They said that Mark Donohue did the same at the same place with a
917/30 in a CanAm race in the early 70s - but there I guess it was a
motorbike-like wheelie caused by the 1000+hp of the big Turbo ...

There's no doubt that the crashes are a bit on the wild side. It's as if
the cars are like pole to pole magnets: the closer they get, the fiercer
the repulsion once the collision routines kick in. But it's not something
that bothers me. If the crash is bad enough to generate some wild antics,
I'm out of the race (or should be).

I'm a little more intrigued by the realistic damage model, which can be
very generous at times. I know it's accumulative, but it still seems
generous.

But what the heck, is it spoiling *any* of the fun? Not in the least! This
sim gets better with every hour you put into it. Worth its weight in gold
this bit of software (CD's don't weigh much do they? :-)
