My humble Pentium Classic, (200Mhz, 98Mb, 12 Meg Voodoo 2), only allows me to
run at approx 12-15 fps, with nearly all the detail turned off, (only track,
groove, wall textures on, many objects, & horizon), in training mode. (Down to
2fps when tryin to race 5 opponents).

STILL I LOVE IT....!!!!!!!!

Just spent all eveing at the nurburgring, and finally clocked a 11:48.68. Only
another 2 minutes to find and I'll be there.

Now if only I could improve my frame rate............

I think you should be getting better performance than that.  I have a 233MMX
with 64MB, and Monster 3D II 8MB,  and I get over 34 FPS alone and mid ***s
or more with 5 AIs.

I understand that there were some memory swapping problems with earlier
Pentium classics with more than 64 MB memory and it may actually slow down
performance.

Hey, you must have a problem. My system is similar. P200, 32 MB RAM,
4Meg Diamond Monster II w/Voodoo2, I'm racing 12 opponents, most all
textures on except walls, nothing in mirrors, and I get a pretty
constant 22fps with occasional spikes to 36 and down to 18. Altho
frequently there are only 3 or 4 other cars in sight. :-)

I think you need to REMOVE some RAM. In this case, less is better!

I have a P200MMX w/64megs & Creative Voodoo2 (8megs)
I'm running 800x600 ALL graphics on, All mirror details on, 12 opponents,
8 sounds and maintain between 15~22 fps.!

I was one of the ones affected by RAM swapping.  Randy Cassidy suggested
removing RAM to get down to 64mb.  I did so and get much better frame
rate.  I have everything on front, cars and track textrure on in rear
view.  I turned off lighting stuff.  I get 12-22 frames at all tracks,
usually at the higher end (22-ish) with a P166 and Monster1.  Try removing
the RAM and see what happens.

I experienced MUCH worse performance than you when I had this problem.
When crucial stuff would load above 64mb, my frame rate would drop to
3-5fps.  It may be something else in your case, but you can give this a
try.

Good luck,

j

It would be a neat thing to post the amount of L2 cache and type of
RAM (eg Simm or Dimm EDO, fast page etc) along with everything else.
