I also suspect that he's some kind of genius.

Restart your computer in DOS mode and reinstall GP2 for best preformance. From
***pit view when pressing the O key it should not exceed 100%, if you want the
speed of F1. When over 100% you'll be driving in slow motion.

Well I finally got my copy of the fabled GP2 all I can say is - This Geoff
Crammond is some kind of genius! I can hardly believe this was made in what
96? Man this guy was really ahead of his time eh? Well I know many here
have used this sim since the beginning so I'd like to ask a few questions.
I know what I have seen here posted always said runs best in DOS I agree
but, should I install thru DOS also? When it arrived yesterday I was so
anxious to see it run I popped the cd in and auto play took me right into
install. Since I haven't done much saving of laps or games yet it would be
easy to reinstall via DOS now if you GP2 vets say so. Next question has to
do with the O key that shows processor occupancy what #s should I look for
from***pit view? The only other thing is did I see something posted here
about the newer windows type keyboards? It seems that I dont always get the
inputs when using the keys for views. Other than that all I can say is
man-O- man this guy was too much & I can see why recently so much e***d
anticipation over the possibility of a GP3 8-) Aloha, Mike

Congratulations on buying one of the best sims on the market! As far as
occupancy level, you should see no more than 95% in order to get smooth
rates and consistent laps, any more and it is just too choppy.  It is worth
running with less detail to get the full driving effects that a good frame
rate brings.  And I too recommend installing in dos only, you will get a
better occupancy rate.  By the way, check out http://www.racesimcentral.net/ for
a section on GP2 enhancements such as updated carsets, and utilities for
customizing the game.  they have a link at the above site to Pieters GP2
page, it is by far the best on the web for game enhancements.  Just getting
an updated carset is worth it.

Hi George,
Thanks to you and others who have sent tips. I have already got Pieters new
carset and the Svga***pit looks great too! I am sorry I am coming into
this just as Pieter is leaving his site ;-( He is such a nice guy, he was
the one I first wrote to when I needed info on GP2. Your so right about the
occupancy level, at first I had like 160% then I started cutting back
things in mirrors and it runs really nice around 90%. Boy I tried with no
trackside objects just to see and at 60-70% feels like Im really flying;-)
But the trackside objects add alot to the overall look and feel so they are
staying. Sure is a great sim!! Aloha thanks again, Mike

To avoid any hassles I would install thru dos. You can still actually
run it from Win anyway but why would you?
As far as the "O" key goes, it is an indication of how hard your cpu
is working. To optimise efficiency you need this figure to be as close
to 100 as possible under the worst circumstances ie traffic or trackside
graphics. You simply play with the fps and graphics settings to
accomplish this. My preference was to maximise fps and then add whatever
details I prefered. Of course, you never want the cpu to be working over
100% since this means the game is running in slow motion (note - unlike
ICR2, GP2 does not decrease fps when your machine is overtaxed. It
simply slows the game down and so keeping cpu OCC below 100% is vital to
realism/consistant pace).
As far as the keyboard goes, no idea except please don't use them to
drive :)
