N2 Darlington "V" and "seam" question

by Gave » Thu, 19 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Hi all,
I've noticed that Darlington seems to have a "V" in the middle of the
track. I call it the slingshot. Just wondering if the banking difference
between the lower half and upper half is an accurate model. I'm not
complaining just wondering.
Also I notice another anomaly in N2 as well as N1. Draw a line
extending from the end of each pit wall to the tracks' outer wall.  As
I cross this imaginary line the car often gives a slight twitch toward the
outer wall, no matter how steady the wheel input. Sometimes it's
enough to cause me to back off to miss crunching the outer wall, at other
times it's non-existent.
If I have a pretty good setup it happens less. And I notice that it
happens more on tracks with dual pits at exactly the same points. At first
I thought it was because I was taking the corners too hot but investigation
showed me that it happened regardless of speed and line. It's almost
as if there is a "seam" there that joins the fromt stretch to the back.
Or maybe I'm just nuts. It's more noticeable at Atlanta, C***te,Dover; places where I'm more
apt to be coasting or powering out of a corner as opposed to braking hard.
I'm using a T-2 and have a back up T-1 which I rotate and keep serviced.
So I'm wondering if this is something that is modeled in N1 and N2 to
indicate a poor setup or a controller quality problem. Whatever it may be
if anyone can enlighten me, please do.

Hi Greg,

Question... since you have both the T-1 setup and the T-2 setup
there and switch back & forth between them... just curious... can you
tell any difference between them (other than the obvious differences
of the pedals instead of rollers and the thicker wheel)... do you have
a preference between the two?  I already have a T-1 setup... was just
wondering if the T-2 setup was worth the "luxury" of buying... any
comments would be welcomed.  Thanks in advance!

  Happy holidays!

Sure is.  The lower part of the "V" you speak of is the apron of the track,
which is very wide.  You can't tell it much by looking at the track nowadays
since it's been repaved, but if you ever get a chance, watch the '85 Southern
500 sometime (ESPN2 rebroadcast it back in September so you might find someone
who has a copy).  Back then, the track surface was much darker than the apron,
and you could tell just how narrow the racing surface really is.
