F1WGP after 2 days playing

by Snak » Mon, 05 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Been playing F1WGP for two days now so I feel I can honestly give a fair
opinion of the game.
A few have said it is not so good after playing for a 5mins - half hour
etc..  To be fair you can`t even get your game controller set up in that
amount of time. I bought F1 2000 after trying the Warez version, not because
I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread but because like a few
others here I thought the feel of the game on it`s physics level was the
best to date ( not that it is awesome, just the best to date in the F1
genre).  The funny thing is I really liked it to begin with but after time
all its problems ( notably the A1 ) killed it for me.  I uninstalled it,
then reinstalled it a week later thinking I would give it another shot,
unfortunately the product is not up to mark,  and the physics of the game
just don`t make up for it.
F1WGP. Yep, the physics are not as good as F1 2000 but they are not that bad
at all. The A1 is really good, in fact the best I have played against to
date. No getting smacked up the rear end, if you have the advantage into a
corner they will yield, on a number of occasions I have been head to head
down a straight with the nose of the next car alongside and like a game of
chicken waited to outbreak them. This is truly awesome because they won`t
turn in on you and wreck you if you are on the inside line and if you`re on
the outside, break late enough and you can cut in front of them again
without being back ended etc..
The truth is when accidents have ocurred it has been me who has cuased them,
they are the ones who would waving their fists at me in real life.
Options are limitless in this game and you can change almost everything
while on the track, no need to return to the main menu for anything so there
are no waits for reloading etc..
What I am trying to say here, is this is a game that the more time you spend
with it the more you learn and appreciate how good it really is.
If you try it and immediately say  or feel that this is no GPL or no F1 2000
in the way it handles and then look no further you are going to miss alot
about this game. Get your controller set up nice, get the car dialed in and
the track and handling under control, explore all the menus and options you
can bring up while on track ( especially the ones in the pits, you can
change your wing settings and gear ratios and every other setting while
parked there still without having to return to a main menu, it will even
tell you what  top speed your aerodynamics will allow you the achieve so you
can change your wing and gear ratios to improve this). To learn what I have
learned about this game so far has took a couple of days of playing and
experimenting as the options are so big here.
This game is truly enjoyable and the more I play the more I like it, where
with F1 2000 the more I played the more I became disillusioned with it.
I like many others wait for GP3 but this will keep me more than happy till
then.
Could go on for ages about all the aspects of this game but I won`t risk
commiting a homocide by boring whoever reads this to death,
and if I already have killed somone remember this posting will self destruct
in 30 seconds.

F1WGP after 2 days playing

by jbo.. » Mon, 05 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Good synopsis -- thanks for sharing.  I've been at it about 2 days,
too -- so here are my thoughts to add to what you've had to say:

I'm not personally a huge fan of F1, but I really enjoyed GP2, so
that's my basis for comparison when it comes to F1 sims.  Yeah, yeah,
GPL is king, blah, blah, blah, yadda, yadda, yadda.  'Nuff said on that
topic.

I just got my hands on F1 2000 a couple of days ago, mainly to check
out the Indy track, and then I grabbed the F1WGP demo when it came
available.  On my AMD K6-2 400 system with a CL Voodoo Banshee card,
both games run surprisingly well, with F1WGP having better frame rates.

I haven't done much besides just run practice laps, so I can't talk
about the AI, but the demo of F1WGP reminds me of an updated version of
GP2, minus the canned spins.  That qualifies as high praise in my
book.  I don't know if it's a much of a "sim" as GPL, but F1WGP does do
a good job of simulating the GP experience, and I find that there's a
high level of fun and enjoyment inherent in the demo.  Very nice
effort, I'd have to say.  Even though I'm not a huge F1 fan, this one
might be worth buying.

As for F1 2000, I don't understand all the complaints I've read here --
the physics seem to be very lively, communicative, convincing, and
realistic.  I really wonder if the GPL engine, when strapped with
modern F1 levels of adhesion and downforce, would feel much different
than this?  I really like the way you can plant two tires in the grass,
stab the throttle, and watch the spin occur as the tires on the
pavement grab traction -- this seems very much in the same league as
GPL to me.  The main thing I don't like about F1 2000, though, is the
camera position when using the in-cockpit view -- it just seems TOO
low; F1WGP seems much better to me.  In terms of realism, the in-
***pit view in F1 2000 may be more accurate than the one in F1WGP, but
I'd compromise the realism for a more realistic-looking view (I think
in terms of GPL's in-cockpit view versus the modified "rollbar view"
when comparing F1 2000 to F1WGP).

The graphics in F1WGP seem VERY photo-realistic -- and very
satisfying.  F1 2000 does seem a bit more "cartoonish" in comparison,
but it still is a very good-looking game.

Overall, F1 2000 feels very much like GPL to me, albeit with modern GP
car modeling in the physics department.  F1WGP did remind me a lot of
GP2, but after a while behind the wheel, the physics reminded me quite
a bit of SCGT, which was strange, because F1 2000 didn't make me think
of the SCGT physics engine even once, even though there is a definite
relationship between the SCGT engine and the F1 2000 engine.  I view
that as something of a compliment to ISI -- SCGT's physics were very
nice, but it never really grabbed me and held my attention; F1 2000
seems like a HUGE improvement in the physics department, but I have no
idea what they've really changed.  Regardless, kudos to ISI.  Kudos to
Lankhor, too, because being compared to GP2 and SCGT is pretty high
praise in my book.

So far, after several days of running hotlaps in practice in both
games, I think they're both pretty decent, and I'd have to say that
based on my own limited experience, I'd recommend either for purchase,
depending on what you're looking for.  For a casual F1 fan like me,
F1WGP seems to do a good job of reproducing the tracks and the
experience (the tracks seem more realistic in F1WGP to me -- but I'm
using GP2 as my basic frame of reference and comparison).  If you're
more of a *** type who's into sim physics, F1 2000 seems to be the
better bet, but the problems I've heard about with the AI could be
prohibitive if you want to reproduce the entire race experience.

All in all, these look like two welcome new additions to the sim racing
world, with both standing head and shoulders above feeble attempts like
SoS 1937 and Test Drive Le Mans.

Just my $0.02.
