Clutch/shifter consideration

by Sprin » Tue, 30 Apr 2002 03:38:39

Hi,

I`m thinking about purchasing an ACT Labs GPL shifter and three pedal
set.  I currently have a Sidewinder FF USB wheel.

Has anyone used this or a similar set up, and would they recommend it?
I`d really love to play games like GPL and NASCAR 2002 with the
actual sensation of clutching and changing gear...is it worth the
cash?

Cheers,

Richard

Richard,
Once you've tasted clutch and shifter, you won't wanna go back.  Can't
speak for the AL perf. pedals but heard many reports about their lack
of durability.  Broken springs appear to be the norm.  The shifter is
excellent, tho.

I converted a pedal set from an old T2 I had for a clutch.  Does me.

Going with a clutch and shifter has been the best PC upgrade since I
first got a wheel...

The Shifter from AL is top notch. Well worth the money. I also own the
Force RS wheel and the performance pedals.

The wheel, too, is of good design.

The perf. pedals as a whole, are also good. It has to be mentioned
that there is a "problem" with the springs that are used. I have had
the whole setup since Dec 01 and have broken 2 springs in the gas
pedal. Now, the pedal still works (and to be honest, I kinda like it
as it is) and have never lost a day of racing because of this. The
spring provides the "resistance" that you feel in a real car's gas
pedal. There are 2 springs in the gas pedal and I broke one about 6
weeks ago and A.L. sent a replacement, free of charge. I have to
assume that the OTHER spring broke (i.e. the 2nd original spring).
A.L. is also sending a free replacement for that. Great Customer
Service.

Now, considering that I race virtually everyday for several hours and
the gas pedal is the most used pedal, I can understand the spring
breaking. However, I owned a refurb. LWFF (orignal red one) for 3 yrs.
and NEVER had a single problem with the gas pedal. I don't drive any
different now than I did then, so I have make the determination that
the pedals are at fault here. Additonally, I've had no problems with
the brake or the clutch pedals.

GPL has a small patch program that can be installed to force the use
of the clutch. NR2002 has no such program yet (I read on the AL forum
that they are working on it). You can use the clutch in NR2002, but it
is not required.

I hope this helps with your decision.

Thanks to you both.  I`m a little concerned about the ACT pedals, I
think that the MS ones are pretty good, although my gas pedal is
starting to squeak a little...

Cheers!
