What's my best option??

I need some suggestions on setting up a link between my computer and
my son's machine.

I want to set up something so he and I can race against each other in
N3...The two machines are only feet apart so I assume that small
network is in order,,but which one?? I have seen this Dlink page and
I'm sort of interested in their product...but what exactly do I need
to set this up??? I mean does each machine need an Ethernet card??
I'm really confused by all this...please help....

Secondly...will I need two copies of each game that I want to play ??
Thanks...folks..!!!!

I've setup something similar using Direct Connection (part of Win 98) works
great.  But I had to upgrade the other computer to match the specs of the
newer one.

I'd buy 2 cheap Ethernet cards and by a RJ45 cross-over cable to connect the
two. And setup the network properties for TCP/IP, IPX/SPX and NetBEUI.

In N3's case IPX will be the protocol used.

Very very easy to do. N3 works pretty well on a network. Recommend DTR and
Toca2 as well.

Every major network card manufacturer sells "home network" kits, consisting
of  two cards and the nescessary cabling. They're, usually, pretty
straightforward to install. You will possibly need your Win95/98
installation CD to load the nescessary protocols.

Getting a network set up is no big deal, if you remember two things:

1) Get brand name cards to make sure they get recognised by your operating
system. Tech support is better at the big guns too.

2) Install all cards and connect them before turning any PC in the network
on. Some cards fail to initialize or plug&play properly without it's
"medium" (i.e. the cable/terminators) installed.

If I were to start over now, I'd go for UTP cabling via a hub as it really
allows for "hotplugging" an extra PC.

As for your multiple CD question: it depends. Most of self-respecting
developers allow multiplayer using just one CD (usually on the "host"
machine) however.
